Old Lycoming Township’s downtown
Garden View is the closest thing Old Lycoming Township has to a downtown. This neighborhood in the otherwise rural Pennsylvania township hosts strip malls and small offices filled with violin repairers, toy collectors and grocery store clerks. Residents can grab a meal or pick up their groceries without leaving Garden View while enjoying lower tax rates than if they lived in the city of Williamsport. However, U.S. Route 15 runs through the neighborhood, leading directly south to Williamsport. The neighborhood also has low crime levels, with a CAP Index Crime Score of 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.
Garden View provides small town living for those looking to escape the city.

Pizza, groceries and collectible toys on Lycoming Creek Road
Lycoming Creek Road is a four-lane street with moderate traffic and businesses along either side. Some are locally operated, such as Pudgies of Williamsport. When it first started serving pizza and wings in 1981, Pudgies was a franchise of a regional chain. However, it soon became an independent restaurant and one of the region’s go-to pizza places for more than 40 years. There’s also an assortment of national retail chains, including Harbor Freight Tools, Rite Aid and Aldi. To the west is Living Hope United Pentecostal Church; the church started in a hotel meeting room in 1999, eventually growing so much that it moved to its current home in Garden View in 2017. South of Garden View is Williamsport’s Newberry neighborhood, home to a local business getting national recognition. New Trail Brewing Co. was ranked the fastest-growing regional brewery in the nation in 2021, and it remains “one of the top 50 fastest-growing microbreweries in the country,” says Jason Fink, CEO and president of the Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce. “They’re knocking it out of the park.” The brewery is popular for its wide variety of beers, from pilsners to stouts, and its spacious taproom and patio.

Bike path to Williamsport
The neighborhood’s Carl E. Stotz Park is named for the person who founded Little League in the 1930s about 2 miles from Garden View. Stotz served as commissioner of Little League in its early years, but a falling out with the league’s president led to Stotz’s firing in the ‘50s. Little League refused to acknowledge him for decades, but today the park is one of many spots in the Williamsport area that bear his name. Parkgoers can play on a jungle gym, basketball court or tennis court. Fittingly, it’s home to four baseball fields that host Little League games. More than 800 parents and kids flock to the fields for Little League’s opening day in April. Across the street from the fields is a lot where cyclists can park before they get on the Lycoming Creek Bikeway. The 5-mile paved trail runs from Hepburnville to Williamsport, cutting through Garden View along the way. As people walk, jog and bike the trail, they cross from one side of Lycoming Creek to the other through a system of vintage railroad bridges.

Most houses are separated from the businesses on Lycoming Creek Road by U.S. Route 15. To the west of the highway, small ranch homes and split levels sit on modest lots that are typically around a quarter-acre. There are houses closer to Lycoming Creek Road, but FEMA identifies flood zones on this side of the neighborhood, potentially putting homes at risk. Buyers may be required by their mortgage lenders to have flood insurance. Home prices usually start around $100,000, topping out in the high $200,000s. Townhouses on the west side of Garden View are priced in the mid-$100,000s and high $100,000s.

Seeing the Potato Capers in action
The Lycoming Creek Bikeway leads from Garden View to Journey Bank Ballpark about 2 miles south, where people can watch Williamsport Crosscutters baseball. The team is made up of collegiate draft prospects who play during the summer. Like other amateur and minor league baseball teams, the Crosscutters engage in promotions and antics, such as occasionally changing their team name to the “Potato Capers.” The name commemorates a prank a catcher pulled at the ballpark in 1987 when he threw a potato during a game instead of a baseball. The pitcher was kicked off the team for the stunt, while the potato remains preserved in a jar of alcohol at a baseball museum in California.

Direct route to Williamsport
Garden View is the densest neighborhood in Old Lycoming Township, and some homes are close enough to stores and restaurants to be within walking distance, particularly houses east of Route 15. However, a lack of sidewalks and crosswalks makes it difficult. Lycoming Creek Road and Route 15 are the easiest ways to reach Williamsport. The latter connects to Interstate 180, which travels east-to-west throughout the metro. People can catch the bus at stops along Lycoming Creek Road, taking it to downtown Williamsport in about 30 minutes.
Garden View locals can get to downtown Williamsport on a River Valley Transit bus.
Garden View residents have easy access to Route 15 that leads to Williamsport.
