Stephens Woods
Neighborhood in Opelika, Alabama
Lee County 36801
New traditional builds off Sawyer Drive
Sawyer Drive gently slopes down from West Point Parkway, with the rest of the area’s residential streets branching off further down. Woods surround the subdivision, with birch and hickory trees and bushes among the landscaping of the neighborhood’s front yards. Homes were mainly built in the 2000s in a new traditional style featuring brick facades and prominent, front-facing garages. These go between the mid-$200,000s and $400,000. New construction has begun to pop up further south in the neighborhood, also in a new traditional style but with more of a Craftsman influence, selling from the mid-$300,000s to around $400,000.Youth sports at West Ridge Park and Opelika Sportsplex
Stephens Woods is closer to two of Opelika's biggest sports complexes than almost any other neighborhood in the city. Easily walkable from the neighborhood, West Ridge Park offers 12 baseball and softball fields, a playground and a walking path. The home field for Opelika’s Diamond Youth Baseball and Softball organization, the park pops on the weekends with the pings of aluminum bats. The Opelika Sportsplex has a fitness facility, basketball courts and outdoor sports fields a little over a mile away. “We recently put in two Olympic-size pools at the Sportsplex,” says Leigh Krehling, community relations officer for the City of Opelika. “That helps our high school swim team practice, and we’ll also bring in some events.” Parks closer to downtown often have more attractions. Floral Park is undergoing a renovation that will add new turf fields and an inclusive playground, while Municipal Park has the “Rocky Brook Rocket,” a miniature train that kids and parents can ride.High marks for Opelika schools
Part of the Opelika City Schools district, Stephens Woods is zoned for Jeter Primary for kindergarten through second grade. The school receives an A grade from Niche, while Morris Avenue Intermediate receives a B-plus for third through fifth grade. Fox Run School opened in 2023 for sixth graders and is not rated by Niche. Opelika Middle is graded a B-plus, while Opelika High receives an A-minus. Opelika High students can participate in dual enrollment programs at nearby colleges, including Southern Union State Community College’s campus in Opelika and Auburn University. Roughly 10 miles away, Auburn University is the second-largest college by enrollment in Alabama, with over 34,000 students.Opelika Songwriters Festival each spring
The City of Opelika hosts events throughout the year, including holiday festivities such as Snopelika's parade and Christmas tree lighting. One of the area's most significant events is the Opelika Songwriters Festival, held every spring. The festival has featured headliners such as KT Tunstall, Sister Hazel and Indigo Girls.Flying from ATL
Stephens Woods is about 3 miles east of downtown Opelika. The Lee-Russell Public Transit system offers a “Dial-a-Ride” service, enabling residents to schedule pick-ups and drop-offs. Even so, Stephens Woods is car-dependent. Access to Interstate 85 is a little over a mile east of the neighborhood, offering a 100 mile-route northeast to Atlanta. Locals often fly from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, which offers nonstop flights to over 200 destinations.Restaurants around the railroad tracks
Residents of Stephens Woods can get groceries at the nearby Winn-Dixie, a little over a mile west. Otherwise, the eastern edge of Opelika is primarily residential. Downtown Opelika and its businesses sit about 3 miles away, with restaurants like Dough Pizzeria and breweries like Whistle Stop Bottle and Brew on either side of the rail line that runs through the middle of town. “There’s truly something for every palate downtown,” says Laura Sellers, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Preferred Real Estate. Sellers points out Zazu Gastropub and Cafe 123 as standout choices. More shopping can be found further west on the opposite side of town. The Tiger Town shopping center, roughly 6 miles away, features Target and Best Buy alongside fast-food chains, while Pepperell Parkway has big box stores like Walmart between downtown Opelika and Auburn.
