Northshore
Private docks, wildflowers and cabin cruisers
Custom homes are the main attraction on Hickory Lane, a residential street spanning the length of Northshore’s peninsula. Spacious Craftsmen, Georgian, Colonial and Tudor Revival styles tower over neatly manicured lawns, priced between $400,000 and $975,000. For the homes at the higher end, rear yards are embellished with private docks, cozy patios, lavish gardens and pools. Local gardeners take pride in colorful beds of wildflowers and vegetables planted in many side yards. Farther inland, old-growth trees shade the sidewalks between Fairview Street and White Swan Drive. More modest ranch-style homes neighbor those with traditional architecture, ranging in price from $255,000 to $400,000.Boating, fishing and swimming on Lake Winnebago
Private docks mean residents can launch boats and cast lines into Lake Winnebago from their own backyard. Homebuyers should note the lake’s no wake zones and periodic algae blooms when boating and swimming. About 3 miles south of the neighborhood, Menominee Park is Oshkosh’s largest green space, spanning 109 acres on land and encompassing the whole of Miller’s Bay. Pratt Trail borders the park's perimeter while Siewert Trail borders the bay, stretching all the way to Ames Point. “Even though I live on the opposite side of town, I go there a lot,” says Eric Lichterman, an Oshkosh Realtor with Century 21 Ace Realty. “When my kids were younger, I’d take them to the Little Oshkosh Playground [at Menominee Park]. They’ve actually redone it since then and it’s really nice now.” A boat park and modest beach area accompany ball courts closer to the park’s southern entrance. But at the heart is Menominee Park Zoo, an 8-acre attraction where new animals are leased each year for a unique viewing experience. From Battle on Bago to EAA AirVenture
Each February, competitors line the trails of Menominee Park for Battle on Bago, the city’s iconic ice fishing tournament. “The reason it’s such a big deal is because they scatter the prizes,” Lichterman says. “You could finish 121st and still win a truck. But even considering those massive prizes, EAA is still the biggest draw of the year.” EAA AirVenture is considered the largest gathering of aviation enthusiasts in the world, and it takes place each summer at Wittman Regional Airport, a general aviation airfield on the south side of Oshkosh. There, visitors can check out air shows, workshops and interactive displays throughout the week. Lichterman notes that many locals even rent out their houses for the duration of the convention to escape the chaos and make some money as upward of 650,000 visitors attend the event each year. More low-key is the Oshkosh Farmer’s Market, held Saturday mornings from June through October. Patrons gather on Main Street to peruse over 150 vendors selling local produce and handmade crafts alongside a rotating roster of live musicians.Big box shops and locally owned eateries in Oshkosh
The Pick ‘n Save on Jackson Street is a popular supermarket option for Northshore residents, located just 2 miles east on Murdock Avenue. Along the way are shopping and dining options including Red’s Piggly Wiggly and The Chalice, a locally owned bar-restaurant serving hearty American fare. Downtown Oshkosh features boutiques, vintage shops and eateries on Main Street, 2 miles south of Northshore. Pilora’s Café is laid-back, serving light Mediterranean brunch plates paired with fresh coffee and kombucha bottled in-house. Wagner Market is a go-to butcher and grocer known for their uniquely flavored brats—including gummy bear and raspberry chipotle. Browsing more than 100 Wisconsin cheeses and a broad craft beer selection, Wagner’s regulars flock to the shelves seven days a week.A walkable elementary school
Families in Northshore are zoned for the Oshkosh Area School District, beginning at Emmeline Cook Elementary. With a C-plus on Niche, the school is walkable from many residences. Vel Phillips Middle School recently opened in 2023, replacing both Webster Stanley and Merrill Middle. Niche has yet to award the school a grade. Transportation is not provided to Vel Phillips Middle, a 2-mile commute from the neighborhood. However, bus service is provided at Oshkosh North High School, which earns a B on Niche. Students seeking more robust community engagement in and outside the classroom can participate in “Communities” leadership courses. The school district also provides an eAcademy online program, allowing students to earn their diplomas virtually or in a hybrid setting.Bikeable routes from Murdock to Main
Northshore is located 2 miles from Downtown Oshkosh. GO Transit buses are not active within the neighborhood itself, but walkable stops are offered along Murdock and Mallard Avenues. Alternatively, bikeable routes interconnect throughout the city, stretching from Murdock to Main. The nearest emergency room is located at Aurora Medical Center Oshkosh, about 5 miles west along State Route 21. Commuters rely on Interstate 41 when heading 21 miles to Appleton or, even farther, Green Bay—a 51-mile commitment. While private jets and hobbyists with single-engine planes take off at Wittman Regional Airport, most residents must travel 20 miles north to fly out of Appleton International Airport for vacation or business.
