Agriculture community minutes from Middletown
A rural, picturesque town a couple of hours from the bustle of New York City, Mount Hope is where residents escape to rolling hills and the distant sounds of farm animals. “It’s an agri-community with quite a lot of active farms in the area,” says Chris Ogden, Broker/Owner of Realty Promotions. “It’s not built up, and there’s very little commercial development.” This quiet atmosphere attracts those looking for land and privacy, while still being about a 10-minute drive from retail. Another perk of Mount Hope is its desirable Minisink schools and access to scenic hiking trails. Being part of a population of about 7,000, residents cruise along 2-lane state highways and narrow back roads, passing farm fields and 4-way stops rather than traffic lights.
Cottages, colonials and pre-constructions with land
Pastoral roads wind through Mount Hope, branching off to residential streets where homes sit far back up long driveways, comfortably spaced apart. “People move here when they don’t want to be on top of their neighbors anymore and want more land,” Ogden says. On the smaller end of the housing spectrum, quaint Cape Cod-style cottages hidden in the woods, some with garages, range from 500 to 1,500 square feet and cost between $100,000 to about $400,000. Spacious 2,000- to 3,000-square-foot colonials, raised ranch homes, and newly constructed Traditional properties that sit on an acre or two and offer detached multicar garages are typically priced between $450,000 and $700,000. “There is a big lack of inventory,” says Ogden. “And because of this, buyers are getting involved early, signing on for houses to be built in pre-construction subdivisions.”
A large Colonial Revival house like this one goes for about $650k in Mount Hope, NY.

Desirable Minisink schools with upcoming renovations
The Minisink public schools are a big draw for families to the area. “The school district is highly sought after,” Ogden says. “It’s one of the reasons that builders are developing in Mount Hope.” Students begin at Otisville Elementary School, graded a B-minus by Niche, before advancing to Minisink Valley Middle School, graded a B. Minisink Valley High School, which Niche grades a B-plus, received $18 million for capital improvement projects, one of which includes a cafeteria expansion that will introduce new culinary programs and tiered indoor and outdoor seating.

Local eats in Otisville and Middletown
For date nights or quick errands, residents head into Otisville or about 5 miles east to Middletown. In Otisville, Nick’s Pizza & Family Restaurant is a counter-serve and dine-in Italian spot, and 4 Main Street Bar & Grill is the local watering hole. Mick’s Deli & Grocery is a convenient stop for fresh deli sandwiches and a few grocery items. “Otisville is very small, so most people are going to Middletown to walk around and shop,” Ogden says. “There are all the chain restaurants and a few family-owned local restaurants that are really good, like Copperbarn.” This rustic coffee bar and diner attracts both a brunch and dinner crowd. Middletown also offers shopping plazas, including Middletown Plaza, where there’s a ShopRite.

Fun and games at Mount Hope Town Park
A sure stop along Finchville Turnpike is Mount Hope Town Park, the main source of recreation in town. Youth leagues play on the baseball, soccer and football fields, and there are also tennis courts, a playground and walking trails. When the sun goes down, this park hosts a summer concert series every Tuesday night from July through August. Just across Mount Hope Avenue is the Mount Hope Dog Walking Path, complete with paved trails around open green space. In Otisville, hikers can access the 350-mile Long Path trail that runs from New York City to Albany. There are also scenic trails on the east side around Shawangunk Lake.
The sports fields at Mount Hope Town Park is where Otisville's community comes together.
With grills, a picnic shelter and playground, D&H Canal Park is a nice spot to spend the day at.

Cruising on 2-lane roads and the train from Otisville
Living in Mount Hope will require a car, as the main thoroughfares throughout town are narrow 2-lane roads that connect to larger highways outside. U.S. Route 209 and Interstate 84 can be easily accessed, and U.S. Route 6 merges onto Interstate 87 on the 80-mile drive to New York City. Another 2-hour way into the city is by the NJ Transit train that picks up passengers at the Otisville Station. “Otisville is the 2nd to last stop on the line,” Ogden says. “But people who go into the city one or two days a week still do it.” Just north of Otisville is a medium-security men’s federal correctional institution with an adjoining minimum-security correctional facility.
