Driving through the residential streets of Uppertown reveals a neighborhood with older homes and vacant lots. "The people here are friendly, and they care, but the homes need a little love," says longtime resident Betty Dobson, who knows something about restoration. She is responsible for rehabilitating the iconic Metropolitan Hotel, where she is now director. Established in 1908 as a haven for African Americans during the Jim Crow era, the building needed repairs, and in 1996, Dobson brought it back to life with the help of grants. With its outstretched gates and ample front porch, the hotel has a welcoming vibe. "It symbolizes hope," Dobson says. "It represents those who want a better future for the next generation."
Murals depict local history
Also a museum, the Hotel Metropolitan transports visitors to another era with historic photos and memorabilia. Some of the hotel’s 11 rooms showcase original furnishings; others feature vintage items, like quilts. Dobson gives tours by appointment, culminating with a slice of chess pie and some sweet tea. Residents can walk to the river and Water Street to visit the Paducah Wall to Wall, public art painted by renowned Dafford muralists. Over 50 life-size images, spanning three blocks along the floodwall, depict Paducah’s rich history. The display starts on Water Street.
Schultz Park is on the beautiful waterfront and offers walking paths and gorgeous murals.
