Parkton combines privacy with connectivity just outside Baltimore

Parkton’s rolling hills and roomy lots create a convenient escape from the city. This community attracts people with its spacious properties and rural feel, in a location just 30 miles from Downtown Baltimore. The homes vary from 19th-century options to brand-new builds, and most sit on at least an acre. Residents get a sense of privacy, while nearby Interstate 83 keeps them connected to the rest of the region.

Acre-plus lots, varied homes and wide-ranging prices

Houses in Parkton conform to the Piedmont region’s undulating landscape, built into the area’s many dips and crests. The terrain accommodates a wide variety of options, from 140-year-old farmhouses to untouched New Traditional-style homes. “Newer homes or recently majorly renovated homes are the apple of that market’s eye,” says Andrew Spangenberger, who’s the team leader of the Spangenberger Home Team with Cummings & Co. Realtors and has nearly 15 years of real estate experience. The environment and location are draws for people, regardless of their taste in home styles. The median lot size here is over an acre, which means residents aren’t on top of their neighbors. “It’s beautiful,” Spangenberger says of the landscape. “It’s private and convenient.” Homes under 2,500 square feet often sell for prices from the lower $400,000s to the mid-$700,000s, while larger houses range from the upper $700,000s to almost $1.3 million.

Students have access to highly rated public schools

Parkton is part of an area that’s zoned for multiple highly rated schools within the Baltimore County Public Schools system. It’s something that buyers point out about the community. “They always comment on Hereford High and Hereford Middle being Blue Ribbon schools,” Spangenberger says. Both Hereford Middle School and Hereford High School have earned the coveted National Blue Ribbon Program award, which has recognized high-performing schools across the country for over 40 years. Both schools are located within about a 15-minute drive from the heart of Parkton, off York Road. Students and their families also have some school-choice flexibility in BCPS through themed magnet programs, with placement based on eligibility, priority criteria and a random lottery when applications exceed available seats.

Easy highway access connects Parkton to jobs and more

I-83 is a central vein running through the Parkton area, aiding commutes in an area that otherwise feels secluded. “You’re going to have privacy, but all major conveniences are within 10 to 15 minutes,” Spangenberger says. The highway helps residents reach restaurants and stores, as well as jobs. McCormick & Company, Inc., known for its seasonings, is one of the region's major employers and is located roughly 15 miles from Parkton, just off I-83 in Hunt Valley. You can keep going another 15 miles on I-83 to reach Baltimore's core. The Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is about 40 miles away using I-83 and I-695.

Where residents can go for dining, sweets and everyday shopping

Parkton’s York Road is a go-to for dining. The selection may not be large, but it’s diverse, including spots like:

  • Casa Mia's Restaurant, where the crab cakes are the signature item on a menu that includes a smorgasbord of American, Greek and Italian fare
  • Woodfire Kitchen, which is known for its pizza
  • Dough Run, where you can grab a homemade muffin and a latte in the morning
Those with a sweet tooth can turn from York Road onto Mount Carmel Road to try one of the more than 30 flavors at the Creamery Connection ice cream shop. Or you can keep going on Mount Carmel to grab groceries at the locally owned Graul's Market, whose bakery department is popular with local shoppers. I-83 also gets people to the Hunt Valley Towne Centre shopping center in about 15 minutes, where you’ll find big-box choices like Dick’s Sporting Goods, Michaels and Marshalls.

Natural spaces make outdoor recreation easy to access

The natural terrain in this region lends itself to all sorts of recreation and exploration. Hikers and cyclists can hop on the 21-mile, crushed-stone Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail from the center of Parkton. Other attractions within 10 miles include:

  • The Gunpowder Falls State Park Hereford Area, which stretches 3,620 acres, has roughly 20 miles of trails and offers opportunities for trout fishing, kayaking and tubing along Big Gunpowder Falls
  • Prettyboy Reservoir, which offers another 7,380 acres and is another spot for fishing, hiking and also bird watching
  • Greystone Golf Course, which is open to the public and where the elevation changes 140 feet across its 18 holes
