Golden Acres is one of Pasadena’s older neighborhoods
On the outskirts of Houston in southeast Pasadena, Golden Acres is an established neighborhood of older homes that offers convenient access to arterial highways. Developers founded the community and built it out during the 1940s; between 1946 and 1959, the neighborhood even had its own independent post office. In contrast to many of the newer subdivisions in this area, Golden Acres doesn’t follow a master-planned layout and instead has varying lot sizes, property styles and landscaping aesthetics. “Golden Acres is one of the few places left in Pasadena with bigger lots; there are fewer housing restrictions there," says Julio Garcia, a Pasadena resident and local real estate agent with Innova Realty. Garcia also notes that the neighborhood’s immediate access to the Texas State Highway Beltway 8 is a huge draw for area employees: “This area is close to the refineries, which are big employers for Pasadena,” Garcia says. It’s a 4-mile commute north to get to major oil refineries for global companies like Chevron and Marathon Petroleum.
Golden Acres is situated near many of Houston's largest business in the oil and gas industry.

20th-century ranch styles and bungalows starting at $200,000
Homes in Golden Acres started to pop up in the early 1920s and were continuously built throughout the 20th century and up to the present day. “Housing styles are a mix: you can find traditional homes from the 1970s to mobile homes. There’s also some new construction here and there, even a few duplexes,” Garcia says. Red-brick ranch styles, hip-roofed bungalows and homes with Craftsman-influenced architecture fill the neighborhood grid alongside towering oak trees and spacious lawns. Single-family homes in good condition range from approximately $200,000 to $450,000, while manufactured homes, investment properties and plots of land can often sell for less than $200,000.

Convenience to Houston’s beltways and major refinery employers
The neighborhood is in a prime location for access to major thoroughfares that synch with interstates and beltways that spiderweb across Houston’s vast metropolitan area. “Golden Acres is convenient to Beltway 8, which will take you around Houston,” Garcia says. “The beltway – also called the Sam Houston Tollway – goes around the outskirts of Houston and is one of the city’s largest highways.” The shortest route to downtown Houston is a 17-mile drive via Highway 225 and Interstate 45, also known as the Gulf Freeway. Instead of making the 30-mile trek to George Bush Intercontinental Airport, residents of Golden Acres can drive 8 miles west to the smaller William P. Hobby Airport, which is served by eight different airlines offering flights to many domestic destinations nationwide, as well as to select international destinations. HCA Houston Healthcare’s Southeast location and the hospital’s 24-hour emergency services department are less than a mile from the neighborhood.

Auto shops, fast-food chains and local mainstays along Spencer Highway
Residents can find some shopping and dining options on either side of Spencer Highway, a busy local road that runs straight through the neighborhood. Autobody shops, hardware suppliers and car dealerships are very common along this stretch of road, creating a small industrial hub. Among the garages and warehouses are fast-food restaurants like Church’s Texas Chicken, Dairy Queen and Starbucks. A couple of miles west of the neighborhood down the highway is Spencer Square, a shopping center with Kroger and several retail stores.
In addition to chain establishments packed along Spencer Highway, Golden Acres is also home to a few local eateries that help define and unite the community. “A lot of people know each other here and meet up at small places in the neighborhood like coffee shops,” Garcia says. Housed in a Craftsman-style bungalow, Sycamore Grounds is a popular neighborhood cafe where patrons enjoy breakfast pastries and local coffee blends surrounded by a rustic-themed interior. Sudie’s Catfish House is a laid-back seafood shack with Southern-style specialties like fried catfish. Established in 1983, the family-run restaurant has since become a Pasadena staple.
