Riverfront living draws homebuyers to Perryville

Perryville is a waterfront community in northeastern Maryland, situated on the Susquehanna River near its drainage point into the Chesapeake Bay. The town’s vibrant waterfront, replete with condos and dining options with river views just across from Havre de Grace, gives way to a more sedate landscape farther inland. “Perryville is more of a sleepy, rural town,” says Brian Zack, a Realtor and team leader for the Diamond Home Group of Garceau Realty. “It’s right on the Chesapeake Bay and has beautiful condos with great water views – the draw for Perryville is that there are more rural activities, but you are super close to jumping on 95 and getting anywhere you need to go.” Zack adds that the proximity to Interstate 95 is helping the area expand. “Perryville is becoming more of a hotspot,” Zack says.

Perryville offers housing variety near the water and farther inland

Homebuyers can find a wide variety of architectural styles in Perryville. “Perryville has a mixture,” Zack says. “It’s very much a seller’s market. There are some beautiful water views in some areas in Perryville for single-family homes, but a lot of stuff on the water are condos and townhouses.” Single-family options can include colonial-style, ranch-style, Cape Cod, split-level and even some Victorian homes, typically ranging from about $200,000 to $450,000. Larger properties can cost over $700,000. Condos can cost between $300,000 and $450,000, while townhouses are typically priced between $200,000 and $370,000.

Recreation in the Chesapeake Bay or at community parks

Perryville Community Park sits on the edge of the Chesapeake Bay, just south of the community, and is the region’s most prominent green space. Visitors can stay on dry land and play on the park’s athletic courts and fields, which accommodate sports like tennis, baseball and volleyball. Kids can use the inclusive playground. The park also has picnic areas, a fishing pier and ramps for small watercraft.

Trego Field hosts Perryville Little League games, while Ice House Park is popular for fishing. Recreation on the water, whether on the Chesapeake Bay or the Susquehanna River, is another common pastime. The nearby Furnace Bay Golf Course offers an 18-hole layout, while Bulle Rock is about 6 miles away across the Susquehanna. Both courses are public. “Bulle Rock Golf Course is a nationally ranked golf course,” Zack says. “Furnace Bay is also very popular.”

Dining out close to the Susquehanna River waterfront

Most restaurants and shopping outlets are in southern Perryville, where locals can order at Johnny’s Sushi House along Pulaski Highway, also designated as Maryland State Route 40, or head closer to the water for food and drinks at 5th Company Brewing. Other spots near the river include Greek Girls Ice Cream, while Lee’s Landing Dock Bar is less than 6 miles up the shoreline. “That’s a great local restaurant with a boardwalk sort of feel,” Zack says. “There are great sunsets and tons of water options over there.” Grocery shoppers can go to a Food Lion along Pulaski Highway.

Getting around the Mid-Atlantic region on Interstate 95

Interstate 95 runs through northern Perryville, linking the community southwest to Wilmington, over 30 miles away, and Baltimore, over 40 miles away. “From pretty much anywhere in Perryville, you’re a few minutes to 95,” Zack says. Philadelphia sits more than 60 miles in the opposite direction. Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) buses have stops along Pulaski Highway, while the MARC Train Station serves rail passengers. UM Upper Chesapeake Medical Center Aberdeen is less than 10 miles away. The closest airport is Baltimore/Washington International Airport, about 50 miles from Perryville.

Perryville puts on seasonal celebrations

From May to October, the Town of Perryville’s 1st Saturdays Farm & Craft Market is held at Roundhouse Park and features local vendors and produce. In late October, the Boo Bash has contests, games, food trucks and more for attendees. During the holiday season, Perryville puts on a Christmas Decorating Contest and Christmas in the Park, which also takes place at Roundhouse Park. Locals can get photos with Santa, shop at the Christmas Market, see live music and watch the Christmas Parade.
Perryville’s Outdoor Family Movie Nights are also held at Roundhouse Park and also has food trucks, yard games and other activities for attendees. Across the Susquehanna, Havre de Grace has additional events. “There are fireworks on the water that you can see from Perryville,” Zack says. A Great Wolf Lodge and Hollywood Casino are both on the north side of the community.
