Chickentown
Quaint cottages and 20th-century architecture
The streets of Chickentown are lined with Cape Cods, bungalows, Colonial Revivals and workers cottages sitting close together on quaint lots. Most of the area’s houses were built between the 1920s and 1950s and have fenced-in back yards. “The southside of the community, away from the highway, has a quiet atmosphere,” Limene says. Noise levels increase as you get closer to the north and west sides of the area. Well-maintained sidewalks connect the community’s residential streets, and locals rely on a combination of driveway and street parking. Single-family homes range from $365,000 to $530,000, while two to three-bedroom townhouses can go for $265,000 to $400,000.Recreation areas in Perth Amboy
The 7-acre Washington Park is the largest park in the city, with a playground, paved walking trails, a skate park and facilities for baseball and basketball. Willow Pond Park is a short drive north and has baseball diamonds, a soccer field, a playground and fishing pond. The Sadowski Parkway Waterfront Park is adjacent to Downtown Perth Amboy and is home to a sandy riverside beach, tennis courts and a popular fishing pier.Career-based learning at Perth Amboy Public Schools
Locals may attend Middlesex County STEM Charter School, which serves kindergarten through fifth-grade students and earns a C-minus grade from Niche. Samuel E. Shull Middle School also receives a C-minus and offers a variety of fine arts and media and technology courses. The C-plus-rated Perth Amboy High School has three career-focused academies — Creative Arts, Digital Media and Health Sciences. The academies place an emphasis on hands-on learning with the goal to prepare students for life after high school in their field of interest. Perth Amboy High also has over 40 extracurricular offerings, from Anime Art Club and the student-run newspaper to Odessey of the Mind and Future Educators Club.Dominican cuisine and local eateries
The neighborhood is home to a small selection of local eateries and fast-food restaurants, including Blue Habanero, which serves authentic Mexican fare in an easy-going atmosphere. “It’s easy to find parking for shopping on this side of town,” Limene says. “You don’t have to deal with the traffic that you can find in Downtown Perth Amboy.” Most locals take the short drive downtown for eating out and shopping, with dozens of businesses lining Smith and State streets. The city is known for its traditional Dominican cuisine, with local favorites including Don Manuel and Mi Tierra. In the summer months, Bayside Creamery is a popular spot for an afternoon treat. Clothing boutiques, thrift stores and furniture shops can also be found along Smith Street. Shoppers can swing by Shop Rite, Walmart or ALDI for groceries.New Jersey Transit and rail lines to Newark
New Jersey Transit operates the local bus routes, with nearby stops along New Brunswick Avenue and Convery Boulevard. The New Jersey Coast Line has a station downtown and spans roughly 20 miles north to Newark. Interstate 95 lies just north of Chickentown and can take drivers north to Newark or southwest to Philadelphia.
