It's not just about the museums
Fairmount is a Philadelphia cultural powerhouse known as the Art Museum Area. Located less than two miles from downtown Philadelphia along the scenic Schuylkill River, this neighborhood is home to world-class arts institutions such as the Philadelphia Art Museum, the Rodin Museum, the Barnes Foundation and the Franklin Institute. But to those who live here, it’s just home. Locals prize the neighborhood’s walkability, thriving restaurant scene, great public transit options and Central Park-like greenspace, Fairmount Park. Fairmount attracts families and singles who value art, culture, architectural beauty and convenience.

Locals can be immersed in nature without leaving city
Residents are steps away from Philly’s largest park. Fairmount Park offers miles of scenic trails. Locals walking or jogging along the Schuylkill River pass gorgeous scenery at iconic sites like the Fountain of the Sea Horses and the Lighthouse at Turtle Rock. They may even see a regatta getting underway at Boathouse Row. The Francisville Recreation Center is a popular spot for swimming and basketball. Athletes who want a more significant challenge can try running up and down the steps in front of the Rocky Balboa statue.
While Fairmount is an urban part of the city, there is immense green space at Fairmount Park.

Hip dining options keep things fresh
Fairmount has a thriving food scene thanks to walkable joints on Fairmount and Girard Avenues. Locals like to grab a coffee and catch up with friends at the OCF Coffee House or check out Jack’s Firehouse, which serves barbecue and Southern fare in a converted 19th-century firehouse. “It would take about a year to eat at every restaurant in Fairmount,” Andrew Kratz, a realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Fox & Roach-Fairmount, says. Kratz has lived in the area for three decades. Locals have their pick of grocery stores nearby, including Aldi and Whole Foods.

Eastern State Penitentiary draws brave ghost hunters and fright-seekers
Residents gather for annual events like the Fairmount Avenue Street Fair and the Fairmount Arts Crawl. They also make the most of their proximity to the creepy former Eastern State Penitentiary-turned tourist attraction. In July, they celebrate Bastille Day by yelling, “Let them eat Tastykake!” when the Philly-made treats rain from the prison tower. In October, the bravest of them enter the penitentiary for Halloween Nights.

Urban style defined by 1920s-era brick row homes
Fairmount’s hip vibe includes stylish 1920s brick row homes, newer ones, and condos. The neighborhood is walkable enough that residents can live here without a car. Those who do have cars usually park them on the street. “There’s a healthy energy to this area of the city with a nice cultural element. Developers came in about 20 years ago and did a great job bringing the homes to life,” Kratz says. One-bedroom condos sell in the $100,000s to $200,000s while 2- to 3-bedroom condos run in the $300,000 to $400,000 range. Some renovated 3-bedroom condos range in price from $500,000 to $800,000. In contrast, newer row homes and condos, such as those along Corinthian, can cost up to a million dollars. Many of these high-end buildings have rooftop terraces with panoramic views of Center City. The median price is $438,450. Homes here sell after 39 days compared to the U.S. average of 42 days.

I enjoy how the community is still intact and very open to one another. In the past year I have experienced nothing but love and acceptance from those around me and in surrounding neighborhoods. Shops and restaurants are within walking distance as well as a few concert hall venues. If I had to implement something into the neighborhood, it would have to be a park or two for families to enjoy.

Nice and quiet and with an assortment of bars and restaurants on many corners. Fairmount park is easily accessible and Center City is a pleasant walk down the Parkway away. Great place!
