Allentown is in "an ideal part of the city"
Atop a hill overlooking Pittsburgh and the Monongahela River sits the booming neighborhood of Allentown. “In real estate, location is key, and Allentown is situated in an ideal part of the city, being Mount Washington's neighbor and only minutes to the Southside or Downtown,” says Colleen Anthony, a Realtor with Howard Hanna - City Living Lawrenceville office, who owned her own company, Albert Anthony Real Estate, for 25 years before it merged with Howard Hanna last year. This Hilltop area neighborhood is also known for its up-and-coming shopping district and its bi-annual Night Market.

A growing business district along E. Warrington Ave
Allentown's shopping district is largely concentrated around E. Warrington Avenue, which has been growing since businesses and organizations began reinvesting in the area in 2014. Today, dozens of local shops and eateries line the street, including The Weeping Glass, a new-age gift shop, and Alla Famiglia, a high-end Italian restaurant. For daily necessities, residents can head to the neighborhood’s Dollar General or travel less than 2 miles east to a Giant Eagle Supermarket or ALDI. Allentown is also just over 2 miles from Market Square, a massive marketplace surrounded by shops and eateries in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh.

Investment opportunities are plentiful
Architecture in Allentown is diverse. Popular European-inspired styles include Dutch Colonial Revival and Tudor Revival. American Foursquare homes, which were created as a direct rejection of revival styles, can also be found here. While most of the homes in Allentown were built between the mid-1800s and mid-1900s, new builds have been popping up around the city. “Over the last few years, Allentown has become one of those very interesting neighborhoods where investors are hoping to capitalize on some great investments and bring some of the homes back to life with incredible renovations. Also, there are some new builds right off Grandview Park on Zuzu Circle and Science Street,” Anthony says. Older fixer-uppers can start below $20,000, while older homes needing fewer substantial updates can sell for between $60,000 and $103,000. Older renovated homes can sell for between $130,000 and $350,000, and new construction can sell for more than $780,000.
