Rowhomes with rose-filled yards
Troy Hill, as the name implies, rests on hilly terrain. Most sections have sidewalks for sloping neighborhood walks, and front yards filled with decorative rose bushes. American Foursquare rowhomes are common and range from $100,000 to $350,000. “They usually have smaller yards, but they’re really cute. Not just a bunch of boring brick-side homes,” says Bickell. Homes in Troy Hill typically stay on the market for 97 days, compared to the national average of 42 days. “It’s really hard to come by housing there. It’s a tight-knit area where not much comes up for sale,” says Sara Leitera, a Realtor at Berkshire Hathaway who has lived in Pittsburgh her entire life.Scenic walks at Three Rivers Trails
Troy Hill residents can choose from multiple outdoor destinations for some fresh air. The Troy Hill Spray Park provides parents with a place to take their children on a summer day to watch them play under the fountains or on the playground. Families can also sit at the picnic tables under umbrellas and enjoy lunch in the park. At the Three Rivers Heritage Trails, people can walk along scenic pathways shaded underneath maple trees overlooking the Allegheny River or even cross the bridge to Washington’s Landing, an island in the river.Solar Eclipse viewings at Schiller Miller
Students fall under the Pittsburgh Public School District and can attend many schools in the city, such as Spring Hill Elementary, which receives a C from Niche. Children may move on to Schiller Middle School, which earns a C-plus and is a STEAM magnet program school that allows students access to experience things like Solar Eclipse viewings and award ceremonies. STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering and math. Kids can advance to Perry Traditional Academy High, a local school known for its athletic programs. The academy receives a C-minus from Niche. While there aren't many private school options available, there is a small cluster of churches on Harpster and Hatteras Street. These include Saint Anthony Chapel, Most Holy Name of Jesus Rectory and Grace Lutheran Church.Drive up Pig Hill or shop in Strip District
Pig Hill, which is on Rialto St, is one of the steepest hills in the country. Here, folks can find the three art galleries in unlabelled, normal-looking houses. The Troy Hill Art Houses require scheduled visits in advance to view the exhibits, which include La Hütte Royal by Thorsten Brinkmann, Kunzhaus by Robert Kusmirowski, and Darkhouse Lighthouse by Lenka Clayton & Phillip Andrew Lewis. The Strip District, just two miles away, is a walkable area home to many shopping options ranging from small art vendors to local produce stands. Here, the fun doesn’t stop at night. On the weekends, popular clubs and bars like Howl at the Moon, Rick's Cabaret & Sports Bar, and Tilden are the place to be.Hop on Pennsylvania Route 28
Troy Hill is 2 miles or about a 12-minute drive to Downtown Pittsburgh for an easy commute to work and play. Drivers use Pennsylvania Route 28 while others can hop on the public city bus to reach downtown. While Troy Hill isn't very walkable, it is a highly bikeable neighborhood. Pittsburgh International Airport is 19 miles away.Eat potato pancakes in historic buildings
Troy Hill shows off a selection of impressive restaurants. For German food, diners head to Penn Brewery, which serves schnitzel and potato pancakes in a historic 19th-century building. At Scratch & Co., patrons sit in a cozy, wooden booth and bar while ordering American meals like smash burgers and pickled vegetables. Alternatively, Threadbare Cider House offers flavored raspberry ciders and charcuterie boards in an exposed brick restaurant. For dessert, De Fer Coffee & Tea offers visitors an artsy feel with equestrian wallpaper and multiple rainbow paintings ranging from a cow portrait to Mario, the iconic Italian plumber. They also serve breakfast items like potato and cheese pies or grapefruit pastries. Residents must go a few miles south to restock on groceries at Giant Eagle Supermarket, located on Cedar Avenue.
