A village feeling in Pittsburgh’s West End neighborhood

West End is a Pittsburgh neighborhood often called West End Village to distinguish it from the rest of the city’s West End. It does feel a bit like an old-fashioned village in this valley between Duquesne Heights and Elliot; the Ohio River and wooded hillsides cradle a tiny enclave of industrial businesses, mom-and-pops, historic housing and off-the-beaten-path art and history centers. However, the West End Bridge, bus service and nearby highways keep the neighborhood from feeling remote, placing it within 10 minutes of Pittsburgh’s busiest commuter and cultural centers.

Century-old houses in a wooded creek valley

National and Victorian single-family homes line roads along West End’s creek valley bottom and rise into wooded hills on a handful of side streets. These old-fashioned houses were built from the mid-1800s through the early 1900s, and while some need significant work, others have been renovated with a blend of preserved historic details and modern fixtures. Prices range from around $80,000 to the lower $400,000s, depending on the home’s rehabilitation needs.

Close to commuter highways, downtown and PRT bus service

“People want West End for convenience to downtown. You’re literally 5 minutes away,” says Chris Ivory, a Realtor with Keller Williams who’s served the Pittsburgh market for 36 years. U.S. Route 19 and Interstate 376 intersect around the south end of the neighborhood, each an important commuter highway for the South Hills and greater Pittsburgh area. West End is about 3 miles from downtown Pittsburgh. It’s also just across the West End Bridge from the North Shore’s professional sports venues, entertainment hubs and major museums. A couple of Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus routes stop in West End between suburban hubs in the South Hills and downtown.

Near specialty mom-and-pop businesses on Main Street

From its old-fashioned commercial buildings to the grand St. James Roman Catholic Church, West End’s Main Street looks like a locally-owned commercial strip from an earlier age. “A friend of mine owns an antique place that’s there as soon as you come into the business district,” Ivory says. “He has one of the largest collections of African artifacts, and people don’t even know about it. He’s got another five-story warehouse in the Strip District.” On Main Street and in nearby industrial areas, you can find:

  • Artifacts, an enormous showroom of antiques, African artifacts and luxe home decor
  • Chaykhana Pittsburgh, a casual Uzbeki restaurant decorated with colorful houseplants
  • Cafe 412, a cozy spot to grab a latte, panini and fresh pastries
  • Johnny’s Diner, a no-frills, family-owned establishment beloved for its homestyle cooking
  • Farmer Girl EB, a small, brightly lit market specializing in fresh produce and pantry staples

Close to parks, community centers and scenic city overlooks

Wabash Park pockets its namesake street with basketball courts, a multi-purpose athletic field and a playground with a seasonal sprinkler feature. Nearby, you can browse at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh West End Branch or attend a hobby club meeting at the West End Healthy Active Living Senior Center. The hillsides around West End are home to larger recreation destinations. West End Overlook Park is named for the sweeping view it offers of the river valleys that cradle downtown Pittsburgh. Emerald View Park, one of the city’s large regional parks, also offers views of the Steel City across its multiple connected community parks, overlooks and forested trails.

A neighborhood with historic character and modern arts

“George Washington and other Revolutionary War figures marched through here, so there’s a lot of history,” says Tony Mazzarini, the former Board President of the West Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce. West End is a place where people are invested in preserving the past and supporting modern community life. The Old Stone Tavern is the oldest commercial building in Pittsburgh; archives at the local library reveal its role in the Whiskey Rebellion. Village organizers occasionally host historic talks and fundraiser block parties to support rehabilitation efforts. Contemporary arts are also alive in West End thanks to Pittsburgh Musical Theater's recitals, musicals and community events like Dancing in the Streets. You can also sign up for PMT’s youth and adult theater programs, camps and classes throughout the year.

Neighborhood schools and magnet programs through PPS

West End is served by the Pittsburgh Public School District. PPS offers neighborhood schools that are assigned based on home address, but also allows students to apply to schools with specialized magnet programs. Pittsburgh Brashear High School is a neighborhood school for West End that also offers a magnet academic program for kids interested in becoming teachers.
