A tiny slice of 0.2 square miles, West End is a pocket suburb that offers history and a view. Locals can admire the city from the West End Overlook, which gazes across the Ohio River to downtown Pittsburgh. With less than 400 residents, the neighborhood consists of mostly office and retail space. Classic Federal-style buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries stack closely along the streets, a nod to the lack of growth that this area has seen. “It’s a heavily industrial area,” says Tony Mazzarini, the former Board President of the West Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce. “George Washington and other Revolutionary War figures marched through here, so there’s a lot of history.”

An Old Stone Tavern brings newness
Much of West End’s history can be seen through the catalogs of the Old Stone Tavern’s innkeeper. Opening its doors in 1782, the tavern hosted several prominent figures of the American Revolutionary War. The building has recently fallen into disrepair, but the Old Stone Tavern Friends Trust has plans to restore and reopen the landmark. This, in turn, will likely bring renewal to West End as a whole.

Classic Foursquare homes and storefronts
Situated among Pittsburgh’s hilly streets, most of the residential sections in West End have sidewalks for convenient walks to South Main Street’s restaurants and shops. Architecture styles feature American Foursquares, some with colorful exteriors, dormer windows and wide, covered front porches. It’s common for a home to neighbor a storefront or diner with a similar facade. Foursquare dwellings with gothic revival elements or modern colonial touches are rarely on the market, but a 2,000-square-foot investment property can start as low as $25,000 and a new construction might cost upwards of $450,000.

Cityscapes from West End Overlook
Residents head to West End Overlook Park to enjoy the city skyline, a spot where locals prefer to watch Pittsburgh’s fireworks shows. “It’s a beautiful view. One of the more valuable parts about this neighborhood,” Mazzarini says. “The city is putting money into it and renovating that whole area.” At West End Park, people can walk the paved, hilly paths or shoot hoops while kids run around the playground. Wabash Park is a small strip of greenspace with a playground and basketball courts right across from the West End Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, which opened in 1899.
