Outdoor recreation and suburban living in Plainfield Township

Plainfield Township provides a suburban lifestyle just north of Grand Rapids. “First-time homebuyers who find the right property and get it for the right price are set up for a good future in Plainfield,” says Henry Steffes, principal broker at Matic Real Estate, who has been selling homes in the region since 2015. “People like the schools, and the housing market is exponentially going up.” Bordering the Grand River with lots of green space, Plainfield Township offers plenty of outdoor recreation throughout the year. It’s also near Rockford, where residents can experience the small mom and pop shops downtown.

Homes range from 1800s farmhouses to modern builds

The median home sale price in Plainfield Township is around $470,000, compared to $440,000 in Rockford and $300,000 in Grand Rapids. Single-family homes are the most common and come in various ages and styles. Homebuyers can find farmhouses from the late 1800s, bungalows from the early 1900s, midcentury ranch-style houses and large New Traditionals built in the 2000s. Townhouse-style condos and manufactured homes are also available. Many homes are either in a private wooded setting or a more suburban development.

White Pine Trail, community parks and two rivers

Locals have access to year-round outdoor recreation. “You’re right there by the Grand River where a lot of people like to kayak, boat and jet ski,” Steffes says. “Then there’s skiing and snowboarding right next door in Cannonsburg.” The 92-mile White Pine Trail, a paved rail-trail accessible from Rogue River Park, has a playground, tennis courts and fishing spots along the Rogue River, a distributary of the Grand River. Grand Isle Park lies along the Grand River and is notable for its public disc golf course and 3,000 feet of riverfront. The township plans to upgrade the park by adding trails, athletic facilities, a stocked lake and fishing piers. Premier Park features two soccer fields used by local leagues, a dirt BMX track with races every week between May and November and an archery facility. When it snows, locals flock to the park’s sledding hill. The Merrell Trail runs through the park, looping more than 6 miles. It’s open to mountain bikers and hikers. The Blythefield County Club has a private 18-hole golf course and hosts the annual Meijer LPGA Classic every year.

Two highly rated school districts serve Plainfield Township

Most students are zoned to Rockford Public Schools. It receives an A-minus grade from Niche, which ranks it as the second-best school district in the state for athletes. Since 2000, the Rockford High Rams have won over 50 state championships in over a dozen sports. Much of the community’s west side is served by Comstock Park Public Schools, which receives a B grade. In 2023, a $59.3 million bond proposal was approved to upgrade security and classrooms throughout the school district.

Shopping on 10 Mile Road and riverside bars

Locals head to 10 Mile Road to shop at Meijer for groceries and other essentials. The area also has several fast-food restaurants, along with Thai Fusion, a local establishment. From 10 Mile Road, it’s a 2-mile drive to downtown Rockford, which has dozens of local restaurants. The township has three watering holes along the river. Archival Brewing offers craft beer, artisan food and a beer garden with a covered patio, fire pits and cornhole boards. Shots on the River has an energetic atmosphere with frequent live music. And Bier Distillery & Brewery serves a unique blend of drinks, such as the Appeltaart – Apple Pie Liqueur and Ms. Pickles ale.

Michigan Titanium Triathlon and Mill Creek Days

The Michigan Titanium Triathlon is held just across the Grand River in Grand Rapids. It’s the state’s only ultra-distance triathlon, lasting 140.6 miles. Mill Creek Days takes place in August in the neighboring town of Concord Park, featuring a parade, Renaissance Faire, live music and other events throughout the weekend.

A 15-minute commute to Grand Rapids

U.S. 131 is the main highway that runs through town. It takes about 15 minutes to drive 10 miles to downtown Grand Rapids. Gerald R. Ford International Airport is about 25 minutes away in Grand Rapids.
