Port town life along the Mississippi River
Located just across the Mississippi River from Downtown Baton Rouge, the city of Port Allen is a unique community all its own. Home to the 10th busiest port in the nation, this place prides itself on being a small, friendly, family-focused town. It’s been that way for a while: Port Allen’s history stretches back to the early 1800s when it was a fledgling settlement along the river's west bank. Railroads changed the town’s fate in the 1850s when the construction of a ferry landing and train depot allowed train cars to be moved across the river to nearby Baton Rouge. The dock and depot still exist today as a testament to the community’s heritage, culture and inextricable ties to the river. Speaking of the river, it's only a short four-mile hop over it to reach downtown Baton Rouge. It's also only 10 miles from the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport, and public transportation is readily available with numerous bus stops all around the neighborhood.

Louisiana Po’boys with a twist

Opened in 1984, this family-owned restaurant serves Louisiana’s favorite sandwich with an upscale twist. While it opened with only two employees, today, the business has grown into a cozy and inviting eatery, complete with outdoor seating. Sugar cane history at West Baton Rouge Museum
One of the most significant cultural features of Port Allen is the West Baton Rouge Museum. Dedicated to preserving and presenting the heritage of West Baton Rouge Parish, the facility is part of the Port Allen Cultural Arts District. The museum features rotating exhibits, kid-friendly events, and monthly music jams, in addition to Historical Happy Hours and art workshops. The main entrance to the collection of historic buildings is the Old Courthouse Vault from the 1880s. The buildings tell the story of local artists, folklife and music, and the sometimes-bitter history of sugar production in Louisiana. Tours of the museum are available in English or French.
The six acres of museum grounds are also home to the town’s annual SugarFest. Taking place each October, the festival is an afternoon filled with live history performances, music, a cake walk, and food vendors. There’s even a demonstration of mule-driven grinding stones. You could get a sugar rush sampling locally made sweets or chewing on pure sugar cane before heading to see a blacksmithing demonstration or sipping on various types of rum.

A blend of old and new builds
"It's a very close-knit community, very laid back. The downtown is a really nice, beautiful spot, and there are a bunch of little parks and rec areas. It's just a quaint, nice town," says Realtor Ross Doran with Patton Brantley Realty Group. Homes in Port Allen range from new custom-built houses to well-established stock. Brick ranch-style residences mingle with bungalows and cottages while the odd Greek Revival peeks out of the tree line as you pass. "There are lots of old Acadian and shotgun-style homes," says Doran. Lawns and landscaping are taken seriously, and there will be riots of color erupting from flower beds in the spring. Prices range from $125,000 for homes needing a bit of remodeling to $300,000 for a new construction with three bedrooms and two baths.
