Port Ewen is a maritime hamlet bound by the Hudson River and Rondout Creek in the Town of Esopus, boasting sweeping riverfront views. “Port Ewen really takes advantage of the riverfront,” says Karina Galeano, a local real estate salesperson with Keller Williams Realty Hudson Valley North. “There are several waterfront parks like Sleightsburgh Park and multiple marinas.” Weaving trails pass through wetlands and woodlands while boaters and kayakers sail in the distance.
Located less than 2 miles south of Kingston’s charming waterfront, this quiet little hamlet enjoys a small-town lifestyle with highly rated schools, a close-knit community and easy access to the city’s hip restaurant scene. “It’s right across the creek, so you could hop in the car and enjoy everything Kingston has to offer within 3 minutes,” says Greg Berardi, principal broker at Berardi Realty, who has decades of experience in the industry. While most of Port Ewen is a car-dependent community, “they just restored the historic Wurts Street Bridge. Now it has a nice walkway and a little trail that leads right into downtown,” Berardi says, adding a walkability factor that many overlook.

Three marinas and waterfront parks
Port Ewen attracts boating enthusiasts, hiking lovers, and wildlife viewers. In the heart of Port Ewen, George W. Ross Memorial Park bustles with activity. A large playground invites youngsters to enjoy themselves, while sports facilities include basketball and tennis courts, a volleyball net and a large baseball diamond. Less than one mile away, a large green space with picnic tables and a playground overlooks the Hudson River at George H. Freer Memorial Beach. Small patches of sand and rocky riverbanks offer tranquil spots for swimming in the summer. Sleightsburgh Park is another nearby waterfront park. This creekside peninsula provides a short trail with panoramic views of the Rondout Creek, the river and the distant historic Rondout Lighthouse.
A short drive across the John T. Loughean Bridge leads residents to Kingston’s T.R. Gallo Waterfront Park, where a paved path meanders along the banks, boat docks hug the shoreline, and a fishing pier invites anglers looking to catch striped bass. It’s also where some of Kingston’s largest events, like Hooley on the Hudson and the Italian festival, take place. However, Port Ewen is its own maritime haven and boasts three marinas within a 2-mile radius: Hidden Harbor Yacht Club, Rondout Yacht Basin and Bridge View Marina & Resort.
About 2 miles south, High Banks Preserve is one of many protected areas that border the river and offer miles of hiking trails. Locals are also close to Shaupeneak Ridge Park, which spans over 900 acres and offers forested hiking trails that pass by pristine ponds and rushing waterfalls.

Quiet residential streets fan off both sides of U.S. Route 9W, showcasing modest Cape Cods, bungalows, split-level, bi-level and ranch-style homes that range from the upper $200,000s to the upper $400,000s. “If you buy a $500,000 house in downtown Kingston, the same house in Port Ewen would be $100,000 less,” Berardi says. Larger Colonial Revivals can sell from the upper $400,000s to the $600,000s. Properties that boast river views come with a higher price tag. Houses here can range from small cabins with wooden shingles to contemporary ranch-style homes and spacious custom-built homes that can sell for over $1 million. Although homeowners along the Hudson River benefit from high elevations, low-lying areas by Rondout Creek and Plantasie Creek are prone to localized flooding. Condominium and townhouse communities are clustered near local marinas, with units priced from the low $200,000s to the upper $300,000s. Manufactured homes are also available in Port Ewen, with units ranging from the low to mid- $100,000s.

George W. Ross Memorial Park is the community’s central gathering place for seasonal events like spring’s annual Easter Egg Hunt and monthly summer movie nights. The start of fall brings the arrival of Port Ewen’s annual Apple Festival. Apple-themed goodies include pancakes, cider, pies and more, while kid-friendly events like field games draw in crowds of young families.
Down the street, December festivities start with a bang at Town Hall during the annual Holiday & Craft Vendor Fair, where concession stand proceeds help fund Christmas items to local families in need through the Tim Bruck Holiday Fund. Later in the month, the Winter Wonderland Parade lights up the town with decorated floats twinkling with holiday lights.
Dining along Broadway
A handful of shops and restaurants are scattered along U.S. State Route 9W, also known as Broadway. “Port Ewen Diner and Roma’s are super popular,” Galeano says. Port Ewen Diner hasn’t changed in years. Housed in an unassuming storefront, Port Ewen is a local staple for its welcoming, homey atmosphere and classic American fare. Brunch favorites include French toast and eggs, while dinner options include hearty pot roast with potato pancakes and chicken carbonara. Down the street, La Roma Pizza & Taco serves a mix of Italian favorites like pizza and pasta and Mexican cuisines like tacos, tortas and burritos.
Locals can search for eclectic finds at Ball & Claw, a quaint antique store, or stop by POW! Card Games & Comics for a rare Pokémon trading card. Broadway is home to a lone Dollar General for last-minute needs, but most residents travel north for weekly groceries. The ShopRite of Kingston is the closest chain grocer, 5 miles away on U.S. Route 9W. Big box stores like Sam’s Club, Walmart Supercenter and The Home Depot line this one-mile strip, making it the retail hotspot for the Kingston metro area.

Commutes around the Kingston metro area
Port Ewen is home to one Ulster County Transit bus stop at the intersection of U.S. Route 9W and Salem Street. Although locals can easily walk to nearby shops and restaurants along Route 9W, Port Ewen is primarily car-dependent. Kingston’s waterfront is less than 2 miles north, while Kingston’s HealthAlliance Hospital is about 2 miles away. Regional commuters can get around town via New York State Route 32 and Interstate 87, which leads residents 66 miles north to Albany International Airport or 104 miles south to New York City. Locals can also drive about 12 miles across the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge to Rhinecliff’s Amtrak Station.
Nearby environmental concerns
Portions of Port Ewen and Ulster Park were once the work site of Dyno Nobel, a manufacturer and distributor of explosives. Today, its former 100-acre plot is designated as a state Superfund site or hazardous waste disposal. Inorganic metals in the soil and creek sediment and energetic materials in the surrounding wetland sediment pose concerns. However, the town has worked with the Department of Environmental Conservation to help cover areas of soil disturbance and install fencing near Robert R. Graves Elementary to avoid access to Plantasie Creek.
