Variety of colorful homes at a variety of prices
Home styles in Brooklyn run the architectural gamut from colorful Queen Annes to Cape Cods and classic bungalows. Many of the residences date back to the early 1900s and it is common to see renovations underway in the neighborhood. Homes in Brooklyn also run the financial gamut with prices ranging from $240,000 for a small, 2-bedroom bungalow up to $1.7 million for a 8-bedroom Queen Anne home. The median price in Brooklyn is $550,000. There are also some new construction homes, condos and apartment buildings sprinkled into the mix. The neighborhood is small, nestled between Highway 99E and the railroad tracks, and is bordered on the west side by the Willamette River. Lots are on the small side and homes are close together, making the neighborhood extremely walkable. Two acres of activities at Brooklyn Park
Brooklyn Park, a 2-acre park in the center of the neighborhood, serves as a community gathering place, hosting several events throughout the year. It is also home to a long-standing free summer program for youth, the center of which is a large slip-and-slide that has been featured in television and newspaper stories. The park is also home to a unique art piece—three large granite boulders that have been sculpted into heads by California artist Marcia Donahue. The aptly-named, Tete a Tete a Tete, is situated near the park’s playground. The park also has a large grassy area, paved pathways, a basketball court, horseshoe pit, softball field and picnic tables. The nearby Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge, on the east bank of the Willamette River, offers river access to put in a kayak or canoe, go for a swim, or do some bird watching. Hawks, quail, pintails, mallards, coots, woodpeckers, kestrels, and widgeons are just a few of the birds that call this habitat home.STEAM concepts at Winterhaven Elementary School
One of the only public schools in the southeast Portland neighborhood of Brooklyn has a long and storied past. Now called Winterhaven, the K-8 school was originally known as the Brooklyn School and was built in 1891 to teach the children of Eastern European immigrants who were flocking to this rapidly growing city to take jobs in local factories, railways, and sawmills. More than 100 years, and three school buildings later, the school’s name was changed in 1997. Today, Winterhaven Elementary School serves about 300 students, and its curriculum places emphasis on STEAM concepts—science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math. The school’s mission is to prepare its students to solve real-world problems, develop high-level thinking skills, and be contributing members of society. Its rigorous learning environment includes project-based learning and hands-on activities that include multiple field trips and other relevant real-world experiences. Winterhaven earned an A-minus grade from Niche. Brooklyn residents may also send their students to Hosford Middle School and Grover Cleveland High School, both of which earned B-plus grades from Niche. Grover Cleveland High School is one of only two Portland high schools that have the International Baccalaureate program. From the Aladdin Theater to Portland Saturday Market
Brooklyn is home to the Aladdin Theater, originally a vaudeville house, which is now a premier concert and comedy venue. “Aladdin Theatre has some really cool acts perform there,” Paris says. “A few years back Dave Chapelle performed there.” Just across the bridge in Old Town Portland, on any Saturday between March and December 24th, Brooklyn residents can shop to the beats of bluegrass pickers and jazz musicians at the city’s renowned Saturday Market. Brooklyn Park, in the center of the neighborhood, is the site of several community events throughout the year, including an annual ice cream social, complete with face painters, games and live music, each September. The park is also home to a long-standing, free day camp for youth each summer.Variety of transportation methods to explore Portland
It's common to see residents walking and riding around the neighborhood and along the East Side Esplanade — a floating trail along the east side of the Willamette River that connects to downtown Portland via the Tilikum Crossing pedestrian bridge. Getting around the Brooklyn neighborhood is a breeze. Proximity to I-5, and a variety of transportation options including the Tri-met rail Orange Line makes this neighborhood perfect for commuters, or anyone who wants to explore the city. For those looking to make a trip to another city, Portland International Airport is a 12-mile drive from the neighborhood. For medical attention, OHSU Hospital is just over 3 miles away.Community supportive of its locally owned dining
While only minutes from downtown Portland and its amenities, Brooklyn residents are fiercely supportive of their locally-owned dining and entertainment establishments. The blue-green and yellow sign for the Original Hotcake House — a neighborhood mainstay since 1935 — welcomes diners 24 hours a day. “There are not many places open 24 hours a day in Portland,” Claire Paris, Owner and Principal Broker at Paris Group Realty says. “It’s great for people watching.” For a cup of morning coffee, residents enjoy Rose City Coffee Co. “They have the best cinnamon rolls,” Paris says. In Brooklyn, the convenience store is king. With no major grocery stores in the neighborhood, these mom-and-pop shops can be found on many a corner. One of the popular grocery stores right outside the neighborhood is Safeway, a 1-mile drive from Brooklyn.A cluster of islands in the Willamette River
Among the most notable natural attractions in the Brooklyn neighborhood is a cluster of islands in the Willamette River, the largest of which is Ross Island. While not open to the public — it serves as a nature reserve and a resource for the Ross Island Sand and Gravel Company — it is a significant fish and wildlife habitat and is home to nesting bald eagles and great blue herons and 50 species of birds throughout the year.
