A northeast Portland neighborhood highlighted by its diverse dining
Located just 2 miles northeast of Downtown Portland, Kerns is an urban oasis that provides its residents with an array of dining experiences all within walking distance of most residential properties. Despite its urban setting, it offers lovely parks and green spaces, providing residents with a peaceful retreat from the city hustle.”

The walkability of the neighborhood provides residents access to the array of eateries and bars. Many of those spots can be found along East Burnside Street, a thoroughfare that also serves as a portion of Kerns’ southern edge. A popular spot for residents is Screen Door Eastside, which brings authentic Southern cooking to the Northwest. Founders Nicole and David Mouton are from Louisiana, and their menu includes everything from shrimp and grits to seafood jambalaya. “Their phenomenal chicken & waffles are a must-try,” Shivers says. Laurelhurst Market is an acclaimed steakhouse down the street from Screen Door Eastside, that’s been named among the top restaurants in the city on multiple occasions. Not only can customers down a juicy wagyu flank steak in Laurelhurst Market’s dining room, but they can also pick up some cuts of steak from its full-service butcher shop, to cook up at home. For those in the taste for a little something sweet afterward, they could swing by the neighborhood Voodoo Doughnuts location, on Northeast Davis Street, and grab one of the Voodoo Doll doughnuts, stuffed with raspberry jelly and with chocolate frosting on top. Another option is Pie Spot, known for its handheld-sized treats that are somewhere between a pie and a cupcake — all carefully crafted, in flavors like chocolate hazelnut and blueberry ginger. For groceries and everyday essentials, residents head to Whole Foods Market, which is also on East Burnside Street.
