A neighborhood with a high-powered history
Mount Tabor has an explosive past, paving the way for a popular present-day landscape. This Portland neighborhood is home to Mount Tabor Park, which sits on a dormant volcanic cinder cone. The site hasn’t been active for some 300,000 years, and the summit rises to more than 600 feet and provides exquisite views of the rest of the city. “The park is a huge feature,” says local Realtor and Mount Tabor resident Tracy Wiens of John L. Scott Portland Central. “There’s 300 acres of trails and a playground, and the views. Mount Tabor was recently ranked the seventh-friendliest neighborhood in the United States. It’s very neighborhoody. It’s very quiet.”
Quiet living is common here
Mount Tabor is largely residential outside of the park. Homes in the area, like the park, date back to the early 20th century, but variety isn’t hard to find — one can spot mid- to late-century homes here, too, as well as some built after the turn of the century. There are still some new houses and townhomes going up in spots. “There is new construction because a lot of our lot sizes are very generous so people have been able to put in new houses on houses that had double lots,” Wiens says. Many of the homes in Mount Tabor have Cape Cod and Craftsman bungalow styling. Most streets are organized similarly: lined with lush trees, bushes, and sidewalks. Mount Tabor Park is in reasonably walkable proximity to virtually the entire neighborhood, and the area is known in part for its tranquil atmosphere. “It tends to be more of a respite from the main areas of downtown.” Options in the neighborhood start in the $400,000s and top out at around $2 million for the more expansive estates, pushing 6,000 and 7,000 square feet.

Roll in style in Mt. Tabor
The hilly terrain of Mount Tabor Park makes for an apt setting for an annual tradition in the PDX Adult Soapbox Derby, held on the third Saturday in August. The derby features more than 40 creatively decorated cars powered by gravity. “It is such a fun event,” Wiens says. “People come from all over the city to attend it. When we first moved here 22 years ago it was a small event and now it’s really a highlight.”

The facility also includes a playground, an off-leash area for dogs, basketball and volleyball courts, and more. The park is also a great spot to watch the sunset on a summer evening, Wiens says. I enjoyed living in Mt Tabor. I could walk to Mt Tabor and hike everyday. The buses and trains run very frequently. I felt safe there and would walk at night though there was a drive by shooting in front of the house. Apparently that rarely happens there.
