Quiet coastal living with plenty of options
If there’s one thing Southern Currituck offers its residents—aside from a quieter, more rural lifestyle—it’s options. Situated along North Carolina’s Outer Banks and near the Virginia state line, Southern Currituck appeals to those who don’t want to choose between pristine ocean views, gorgeous greenways, and historic vibes. “You can fish, golf, go duck hunting—there’s so much to do,” says real estate agent, home builder, and lifelong resident Clayton Howard. “And even though its more rural than some of its neighbors, you can still go to some really cool, historic sites nearby.” With its outdoorsy vibes and rural location (that’s still close enough to urban conveniences), Southern Currituck is a slice of classic coastal living.
Take a ride and spot wild horses
Apart from the abundance of hunting, fishing, and beach-strolling residents can take part in, Southern Currituck features a host of amenities that contribute to its rural charm. Those looking for a bit of greenery to go along with their beach view can find it at Sound Park. Popular with families as well, the park is a great place to take kids and teens—particularly those interested in making use of the park’s softball fields or built-in skatepark. Nearby Corolla is notable for its wild horses, and residents can take their vehicles onto the beach to take in the majestic sight of the local Banker horse
Historic vibes, exciting new construction
Though the area may be deeply historic, there’s no shortage of new construction within Southern Currituck. “The areas right above it are growing fast, so you have people moving down here and building new homes,” says Howard. “It’s a really popular place for moderately priced starters.” Houses in the area are varied, though contemporary and ranch-style homes are most common. Prices range from $300,000 to $600,000—though homes along the sound may go for higher. The rural nature of the area means that many of the homes are on large lots with sizable yards, too.
