Like the famous Italian city, Rome, Ohio was named for its seven hilltops. But it's better known for being the place of origin for the Rome Beauty apple. First planted on the banks of the Ohio River in 1817, the fruit is known for its shiny red skin and popularity amongst bakers. Although the original tree is long gone, its descendants still bear fruit in local orchards. And like its native fruit, Rome itself has been growing for decades. This suburban riverside area has one of the largest stocks of newer homes anywhere around Huntington, but it also offers many events, school programs and other ways to be part of a community with deep roots. "As far as the growth goes, you've got some new construction going on in Lawrence County,” says Realtor Vineta Maynard of Realty Exchange. “The area of Proctorville has always had a lot of the upscale neighborhoods.”
Established around 1821, Rome Township was originally known as Center Township before adopting its current name.

New housing aplenty between 20th century ranch-styles
Since the 1990s, Rome has seen more new construction than most areas around Huntington. “You'll find subdivisions there that are newer and that come with restrictions, so you have more control over what the house next door looks like,” Maynard says. “I think the newer communities and subdivisions with restrictions are what people desire most over there.” In between the newer subdivisions full of new traditional homes, established residential areas are largely filled with midcentury ranch-style homes and cottages from the 20th century. Most of these have sold for between $150,000 and $350,000. Some newer ranch-style homes in Rome even come in a new traditional style, providing a mix of both options. Larger, multi-story new builds typically sell for between $250,000 and $500,000.

D.C. field trips and active parent-teacher organizations
One major selling point of Rome is its schools, all of which have very small class sizes less than half the national average of 17 students per teacher. Students begin an education at either Fairland East Elementary, rated B-minus by Niche, or at Fairland West Elementary, rated B-plus. Fairland East is particularly known for having an active parent-teacher organization, while Fairland West is known for its literacy intervention program. For grades six through eight, students attend Fairland Middle School, rated B-minus. In addition to numerous clubs and other extracurricular activities, students at Fairland Middle School can attend out-of-state field trips to historic sites in Washington D.C. and Colonial Williamsburg. Fairland High School is the last step and earns a B-minus rating.

County fairs and community organizations keep residents connected yearround
There are several small-scale events and social activities that keep residents connected throughout the year. These include churches, local civic clubs like Veterans of Foreign Wars and programs at the Briggs Library's Eastern branch in Proctorville. But the real focus is on the Lawrence County Fair, which occurs every summer in July at the Fairgrounds in Rome. The week-long event offers all the usual trappings of a county fair – Petting zoos, amusement rides, live entertainment and fried food galore. Popular attractions also include several demolition derbies and tractor pulls, as well as livestock shows and auctions hosted by the local 4-H Club. Outside of that one week in July, the Fairgrounds occasionally hosts smaller events, like demolition derbies and touring art expos.
Private athletic complexes offer paintball and indoor basketball
There aren't many parks in Rome. But several options sit a short distance away in Proctorville, like Center Park, where locals go to play soccer or do laps around the paved walking path. A playground on Thomas Street is also popular with parkgoers looking to start a game of pickup basketball. Across the street, three ball diamonds are often used for neighborhood kickball games and Little League Baseball practice. When it's raining, residents can head to Complex 7 for a variety of indoor athletic amenities, including 2 full size basketball courts available to rent for open play and league games. Next door, Boombox offers an indoor gym and group exercise classes for all ages. Those looking for some heart-pounding fun can visit Paintball Lab in Rome, which also doubles as an outdoor athletic complex with a full-size football turf.
Athletes in Rome utilize Complex 7's specialized equipment, including the Dr. Dish shooting machine and Vertimax trainers, for skill development.
Proctorville Pocket Park offers limited parking but easy access for walkers and cyclists from Rome.

Local supermarkets and chains, plus more options in Proctorville
There aren't a ton of commercial options in Rome, aside from a FoodFair grocery store and some chain restaurants outside of the Fairgrounds on Market Street. Proctorville has marginally more businesses to visit on State Street, mostly chain restaurants, like Tudor's Biscuit World and Biggby Coffee. There are a few locally owned restaurants to try in Proctorville, like Katimali's Pizza. China Wok is another popular option located next to the Kroger supermarket in Proctorville.
Biggby Coffee is located along Route 7 near Rome, offering espresso drinks, smoothies, and breakfast snacks.
Food Fair is one of the closest full-service grocery stores to Rome, located in nearby Proctorville.

New bridges and light traffic outside of County Fair week
During the week of the County Fair, Rome sees an increase in traffic, particularly on major roads around the Fairgrounds. But for most of the rest of the year, Rome is a quiet place with not much traffic. There are also ongoing plans to build a new river crossing north of Rome, connecting the Ohio side with Lesage, West Virginia. This is expected to shorten commutes to jobs upriver and across the border in West Virginia – A trip that currently requires driving through traffic-prone areas of Huntington.
High water and low crime rates
Several sections of Rome are in a flood zone. These areas have a mild-to-moderate risk of being affected by heightened water levels on the Ohio River and on small intermittent streams that flow through Rome. The majority of residential areas are not in a flood zone, but homes close to the Ohio River and intermittent streams might require a flood insurance policy.
Rome also sees below average crime rates. The community has a CAP Index Score of 2, half the national average and well below the average scores for core neighborhoods of Huntington, like downtown.
