Mount Pleasant's historic charm along Chalkstone Avenue

Mount Pleasant is a northwest Providence neighborhood with tree-lined streets, charming early 20th-century homes and a small local business scene on Chalkstone Avenue. Around 2 miles west of Downtown Providence, the neighborhood has easy access to public schools, local bus routes and Rhode Island College. Green space is a major draw, highlighted by Triggs Memorial Golf Course, a Donald Ross-designed public course spread across around 140 acres of the community’s northwest side.

Cape Cods, Colonials and mid-range prices in Providence

Mount Pleasant features a mix of single-family and multi-family homes, most built between 1900 and the 1940s in classic New England styles. Cape Cods and Colonial Revivals are especially common, along with bungalows and triple-decker multi-family homes. Many single-family homes feature hardwood floors, brick fireplaces, covered front porches and fenced backyards. Stand-alone homes start in the high $200,000s and reach the low $600,000s, while multi-family builds with two to three units typically range from the low $500,000s to the mid-$700,000s. “It’s always been a nice, friendly neighborhood,” says Michael Pinelli, a broker associate with Re/Max Preferred. “You get a lot of home for your money and a good resale value. A lot of houses are in great shape. The price point is good for first-time home buyers or middle-range income.” With a median price of roughly $390,000, Mount Pleasant remains more affordable than bordering neighborhoods like Elmhurst, which has a median of $470,000.
