A quiet community teeming with Revolutionary and Civil War history
Originally called the Great Swamp by its Indigenous occupants, Quakertown’s name transitioned to The Quaker’s Town when the community was established around the Main Street area in 1803. Today, this Pennsylvania borough is noted for its ties to both major wars fought on American soil. Because of this rich history, there are several areas and buildings throughout Quakertown that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. One is Liberty Hall, where the Liberty Bell was kept hidden in 1777 during its trek from Philadelphia to Allentown. The then crack-less bell was evacuated from Philadelphia during the Revolutionary War, so that British soldiers wouldn’t confiscate it and melt its bronze for cannons. Quakertown also played a part in the Civil War, reflected in the Richard Moore House. A Quaker potter, Moore used his home as an important stop along the Underground Railroad. Visitors can take a self-guided walking tour through the borough, passing by 35 historic sites.
With a population of less than 10,000 residents today, this quaint community is located about 15 miles south of Allentown and 40 miles north of Philadelphia. “Quakertown is one of the last stops before you hit Lehigh Valley,” says Tabitha Heit, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway, adding that many residents choose a quieter life in the historic borough as opposed to its surrounding cities. “A lot of people who live in Quakertown come from either the Philadelphia side or the Allentown side."

Colonial-style homes with more affordable prices than Bucks County
Harking back to its Revolutionary War history, much of Quakertown is composed of Colonial-style architecture, with Cape Cods and ranch-style homes also peppered throughout. “There are different options and different housing styles; some have a more downtown feel, and some have privacy,” Heit says. “Downtown, the homes are closer together, and as you push further out, it gets more rural.” There are also newer housing subdivisions that feature traditional builds. The American homebuilding company Toll Brothers finished the construction of Steeple Run, a 38-home development, in August of 2024. The developers are also planning a 104-unit townhome community called Richland Walk on the northeast section of Quakertown.
The housing inventory is very low in Quakertown, and it is not uncommon for just a handful of properties to be on the market at any given time. The median price for a home is $385,000, compared to $555,000 in Bucks County.

Year-round shopping at Trolley Barn and Quakertown Farmers Market
On the east end of Broad Street, The Trolley Barn Public Market is a hodgepodge of local businesses and eateries, with 10 food vendors, three tasting rooms, a year-round public market and a beer garden. On the west end of Broad Street, McCoole’s is a tavern with cozy wood and stone decor located at the Historic Red Lion Inn. Local lore holds that the revolutionaries who carried the Liberty Bell to safety in Allentown spent a night at the inn.
Another city staple, the Quakertown Farmers Market and Flea Market features over 100 vendors on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays all year. Known locally as “QMart,” the market has been serving the borough since 1932. “The farmers market is a huge indoor market with lots of nice treats, bakeries and meat markets,” Heit says. “But for more chain restaurants and department-store shopping, you’d have to get on Route 309 and leave Quakertown.”

Quakertown Memorial Park and the Univest amphitheater
Centrally located in the community, Quakertown Memorial Park features QuiNBy’s Playground, completed in 2022. In collaboration with students from Quakertown Public Schools, this playground has different sections designed to accommodate both young kids and older children. In addition to this play space, the park has a community pool, athletic fields and a veterans’ memorial site. On the south side, Free Fall Action Park has both a skate park and a BMX bike course, as well as basketball courts. About 8 miles east of town, Nockamixon State Park offers trails and lake access.
The Univest Performance Center is located on the northern side of Quakertown. The outdoor amphitheater draws a crowd for The Sounds of Summer concert series, which fills the air with melodies from both big names and local musicians. Recent performers in the summertime lineup have included Scotty McCreery, Switchfoot and Blue Oyster Cult. On a much smaller – and cuter – scale, My Size City opened its doors in March of 2024. This indoor children’s play space features seven different toddler-safe playhouse concepts that one might find in a city, such as a construction site, an animal hospital and a grocery store.
Quakertown Alive! is a nonprofit organization that aims to bring value to the Main Street area of Quakertown through seasonal events and arts festivals all year. These include Arts Alive! in the spring, Brew Fest at the end of summer, Autumn Alive! in the fall and the Christmas Tree Lighting Festival during the holidays. Quakertown experiences all four seasons, with warm, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. February has the most snow at an average of 10 inches.
In the heart of Quakertown, Memorial Park pays tribute to those who have made a lasting impact.

Route 309 connects commuters to Allentown and Philadelphia
Quakertown is situated around Route 309, which connects the borough to both Allentown, about 15 miles north, and Philadelphia, about 40 miles south. "You can take 309 all the way to Philadelphia if you want to," Heit says. Route 309 connects to Interstate 76, mostly referred to as the Pennsylvania Turnpike, north of Philadelphia. St. Luke’s Hospital serves the city with a campus near Main Street and another newer campus off Broad Street. The nearest major airport, Philadelphia International Airport, is about 50 miles away. New York City is an 85-mile drive east, so those who don’t mind a longer commute can enjoy a calmer lifestyle in Quakertown despite offices in the Big Apple. The area is car-dependent, though, as no public bus system or passenger train services the community. Crime statistics for Quakertown are not readily available.
