Green oasis in Queens
Douglaston is a community filled with trees and spacious lawns on the Queens and Long Island border. “Douglaston is unique because of the amount of land around each home. It’s more rustic than the rest of Queens because of all the trees and foliage,” says Sean Walsh, president of the Douglaston Civic Association and local resident since 1982. “There’s also a very good school district. Some people stay here all their lives.” While primarily residential, the neighborhood is surrounded by Alley Pond Park to the west and dining and shopping to the east. “It’s like you’re living in Queens, but you have a similar environment to Long Island,” says David Tair, an owner and broker at RE/MAX 1st Choice who has been helping people find homes in the area for over 32 years. “But you have lower taxes than in Nassau County.”

The Alley Pond Environmental Center gives visitors an up-close look at recovering wildlife, and the Green Meadows Petting Farm organizes fun events like their Memorial Day celebration with bouncy houses, hayrides and pony rides. Louis Pasteur Park is a quieter option for those who want a park closer to home. The 1866 Douglaston Manor mansion overlooks the 18-hole Douglaston Golf Course and is a popular place for hosting weddings and grand events. The Queens Public Library at Douglaston/Little Neck keeps a full calendar of community groups and programs, such as the Canasta Club and summer reading activities. So, it’s a good mix of both,” Walsh says. A five-bedroom home that’s seen renovations can land in the $1 million to over $3 million range. Some townhouses hit the market for $600,000 to $975,000, while condos surrounding Douglaston Golf Course can sell for $275,000 to $545,000.

With many stores for various types of consumerisms, there is hardly any trouble walking to find what is needed. Additionally, parks are found easily and the schools are safe, diverse, and enjoyable.
