Green oasis in Queens
Douglaston is a community filled with trees and spacious lawns on the Queens and Long Island border. “Douglaston is unique because of the amount of land around each home. It’s more rustic than the rest of Queens because of all the trees and foliage,” says Sean Walsh, president of the Douglaston Civic Association and local resident since 1982. “There’s also a very good school district. Some people stay here all their lives.” While primarily residential, the neighborhood is surrounded by Alley Pond Park to the west and dining and shopping to the east. “It’s like you’re living in Queens, but you have a similar environment to Long Island,” says David Tair, an owner and broker at RE/MAX 1st Choice who has been helping people find homes in the area for over 32 years. “But you have lower taxes than in Nassau County.”

The Alley Pond Environmental Center gives visitors an up-close look at recovering wildlife, and the Green Meadows Petting Farm organizes fun events like their Memorial Day celebration with bouncy houses, hayrides and pony rides. Louis Pasteur Park is a quieter option for those who want a park closer to home. I liked that it was close to the bus stops, my elementary school, middle school, and movie theater. I liked that it was close to CVS pharmacy. I liked that it was pretty quiet. The thing I would like to change is that too many accidents occur near my house. I had a lot of ambulances, fire trucks, and police cars pass by.
