Kew Gardens
Condos, townhouses and “mansions”
“There’s a large variety of housing options,” Singh says. “You have condominium complexes, and more in comparison to other areas of Queens; you have co-op apartments with a lot of indoor amenities; and you also have townhouses, single-family dwellings and multi-family dwellings.” Homebuyers can expect to pay around $160,000 for a studio condo, while units with two or more bedrooms creep into the $300,000s, though they should also keep HOA fees in mind, which can be hefty in established buildings. Singh highlights Kew Gardens’ diversity of detached, single-family homes, noting there are even options on the higher end with private parking and 3 bedrooms, all the way up to 6 or 7. “We call them ‘mansions,’” he says. That nickname is not misleading, many following palatial Tudor Revival and Colonial Revival designs, with half-timbered walls and traced windowpanes, and selling for around $1.5 million. More modest homes with 1,500 square feet of space yet 3 to 5 bedrooms can sell for around $900,000.International eating and shopping
There’s no shortage of eating options in Kew Gardens and the surrounding areas. “You have a large number of Jewish delis and Russian kosher restaurants but also Haitian, French, Hispanic, Italian and West Indian places,” Singh says, highlighting Tikka Indian Grill and Spolini’s in particular. Residents can start the day at Baker’s Dozen Bagels for breakfast and celebrate Friday night at 718 Lounge or Austin’s Ale House. For groceries, residents can pick from larger supermarket chains like CTown and Key Food or shop locally at Y & M Glatt Mini Mart and Alba’s Deli and Grocery.Kew Gardens’ residents are film buffs
A ten-day international film festival, The Festival of Cinema NYC, takes place at the Regal UA Midway in neighboring Forest Hills, though residents can also enjoy movies year-round at Kew Gardens Cinemas, an Art Deco movie theater.Highly regarded schools
Several schools operate in the area, though students might follow a feeder pattern of P.S. 99 Kew Gardens, an elementary school; J.H.S. 190 Russell Sage, a junior high; and Forest Hills High School. These first two schools are A-rated by Niche, while Forest Hills High is A-minus rated. High-achieving students can attend a nearby specialized high school, the Queens High School for the Sciences at York College. As the names suggests, students take courses at York College, able to use the institution’s facilities such as its laboratories, gym and cafeteria. Students take a rigorous curriculum with emphasis on STEM AP courses. Niche ranks the school #12 in “Niche standout high schools in America,” and many students go on to Ivy League schools.Kew Gardens is green indeed
There are a few tranquil green spaces within this bustling community like Eight Oaks Triangle, which offers mature trees and benches. Locals can also find stillness within Maple Grove Cemetery, which also muffles the noise of Van Wyck Expressway for residences. Forest Park, the third largest park in the borough, is right next door, offering a carousel, basketball courts, a skate park, a golf course and miles of forested hiking trails. Residents can also go for walks around Willow Lake and Meadow Lake, which are just to the north.A ton of ways to get around
The E and F trains operate out of subway stations like Kew Gardens-Union Tpke, while the J/Z line stops at 121st St. The Long Island Rail Road stops at the centrally located Kew Gardens station. Several bus lines pass through like Q56. Residents are also near major road junctions, Van Wyck Expressway, Queens Boulevard and Grand Central Parkway easily accessible to residents. Depending on traffic, residents can be a 30-minute drive from John F. Kennedy International Airport.
