Laurelton
Matching Tudors, brick rowhouses and a communal village
Blocks in Laurelton often stick to one or two housing styles, so where one street may have short, boxy stick or colonial houses, the next street over could be wall-to-wall Tudors, as is the case for a few blocks on the north side. Prices for single-family homes start around $550,000 and go up to $900,000. Multifamily homes, which are mostly in the southern half, are priced between $800,000 and $1.2 million. “The south side is known as Laurelton Estates,” Johnson says. “It’s the prime area in Laurelton because the houses are very spacious.” On the east side, where Merrick Boulevard and Laurelton Parkway meet, is Laurelton Gardens, a complex of mid-century co-op buildings. These two-story brick buildings have nearly 400 units priced between $200,000 and $300,000, many with assigned off-street parking spaces or garages.Caribbean flavors and fresh New York produce
Nearly all of Laurelton’s restaurants and local businesses are on Merrick Boulevard, which splits the neighborhood into its north and south halves. Jamaican, Haitian and other Caribbean eateries serve jerk chicken, ox tail and red snapper, and the Key Food Supermarket is right there for groceries. At the southern end of the neighborhood, near the Laurelton LIRR station, the Laurelton Farmers Market sells fresh produce on the weekends.Pocket parks within, a nature-infused green space nearby
Laurelton has a few small parks just outside its boundaries, like Montbellier Park on the southwest side and Cabbell on the north, both with playgrounds. Laurelton Skate Park, on the southeast side, is just above Brookville Park, a green space with ponds and tiny rivers that run south into Jamaica Bay.Average schools with above-average options nearby
Local students in preschool through fifth grade can attend P.S. 132, which has a B-minus grade from Niche. The Gordon Parks School teaches preschool through eighth grade and has a C-plus from Niche, and the Queens United Middle School, which has a C-minus grade, hosts an annual fair to connect students with high schools across the city. In neighboring Springfield Gardens, Excelsior Preparatory teaches high school grades and has a B-plus from Niche.Community gatherings in Roy Wilkins Park
“Most of the activities for Laurelton are in Roy Wilkins Park,” says Johnson. That park, which is 2 miles west in St. Albans, has a recreation center that hosts an annual Kwanzaa celebration, as well as concerts, art exhibits and the Jamaican Jerk Food Festival.Near JFK Airport, with an express bus and LIRR commutes
There are no subway stops in Laurelton, but the X63 express bus on Merrick Boulevard reaches Midtown Manhattan in 1 hour. The Long Island Rail Road station at Laurelton’s southern end has trains to Far Rockaway and Long Beach, and on the east and south sides, the Belt Parkway can take residents to JFK Airport — less than 4 miles south — and throughout Brooklyn.
