In 1925, The Real Good Construction Company started developing Rego Park by building high-rise buildings and setting up new stores. Today, a diverse community thrives in the area alongside an array of restaurants and the Rego Center. Residents can dine out and shop without leaving the neighborhood. When the time comes to head farther from home, though, subway stations and the Long Island Expressway are closeby. Small parks create spaces to enjoy the outdoors, but major destinations like Flushing Meadows Corona Park and Forest Park are both less than 3 miles away. Rego Park mixes work and relaxation with its retail scene and housing options.

'Smorgasbord' of dining options
Rego Center is a compact mall with 25 stores, including Costco, Aldi and Marshalls. The mall also has a few restaurants, but most locals dine out at eateries around the neighborhood. "Rego Park is more of a smorgasbord of different types of dining. You can get Indian, Chinese, and a lot of other variations of food," says Angie Boudourakis, a licensed sales associate for Daniel Gale Sotheby's International Realty with over 20 years of experience. There’s Diner Bar, popular for its classic American fare served for brunch and dinner. Black Sea Fish & Grill offers Mediterranean dishes, while Marani Restaurant whips up kosher Georgian meals like lamb chops and borsch soup. The diverse range of restaurants continues with Grand Sichuan’s Chinese options and the Lime & Salt Restaurant Bar pairs Mexican dishes with its long list of cocktails. “Rego Park's nightlife is really like the city; even at midnight, you can go out," Zakinova says. Farther south in Forest Hills, Austin Street has even more bars and dining destinations. "Austin Street is like a strip of beautiful restaurants, stores, anything local that people can visit and enjoy," Zakinova says. Including Costco, locations like Netcost Market, Key Food Supermarket and Fresh Value Marketplace provide the area with grocery options.

Co-ops from $165,000; pricey peace and quiet in The Crescents
Cooperative living is very popular among Rego Park residents. "It's very affordable for first-time homebuyers and someone looking to downsize, like empty nesters,” says Olga Zakinova, a licensed associate real estate broker with Douglas Elliman who has lived in Queens since 1993. “When it comes to a co-op, in many cases, everything is done for you, like building upkeep." A one-bedroom co-op or condo unit can sell for $165,000 to $400,000, while two- or three-bedroom units can go for $400,000 to $800,000. Detached and semi-detached houses, popular in the southernmost point of the neighborhood, range from $750,000 to over $1 million. Many of the neighborhood's single-family homes are in an area called The Crescents in the southern half of the neighborhood. Homes in this section, made up of five streets in a crescent-like shape, have small front yards and narrow driveways on shady streets lined with sidewalks."The Crescents are nice and quiet and more peaceful than where the cooperatives are. But be prepared because that peace and quiet will cost you. The price point for Crescent homes is in the millions," Zakinova says.

Those in the heart of the neighborhood attend P.S. 174 – William Sidney Mount for pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade classes. Both schools earn A-minus ratings from Niche. The A-rated J.H.S. 157 - Stephen A. Halsey teaches middle schoolers. Students later transition to Forest Hills High School, which also gets an A-minus. The school recently brought back its student-produced newspaper. Parents can also enroll their children in private schools, including the Jewish Institute of Queens and Resurrection Ascension Catholic Academy.

Malls are pretty close, commute is very easy as mass transportation is easily accessible. Its very civilized and everything is available here hospitals, schools, parks, gyms, shopping centre, restaurants and bars. The only problem is parking as to find a parking spot is like fighting a war. you will have to park either on the Main Street or couple of blocks down (if you are lucky to find the parking).

The general atmosphere is very calm and suburban, mostly houses with small lawns and backyards. There are people from all age ranges, and people generally are reserved and keep to themselves. There are several shopping streets that are conveniently located, and if I could do it all again, I think I would not mind living here. It is a comfortable and safe community, probably middle class or upper middle class compared to the rest of the country.
