Living in Oakwood, a preserved 19th-century Raleigh neighborhood
Oakwood, one of Raleigh’s oldest neighborhoods, showcases preserved 19th-century architecture along its tree-lined streets. Bordering downtown Raleigh, this community is steps from the city center, but enjoys a close-knit, residential environment. Highly rated Wake County schools serve the area, and two private colleges – Saint Augustine’s University and William Peace University – are on either side of Oakwood. You can also walk to community mainstays like SmokeStacks Cafe and Side Street Restaurant, plus the Historic Oakwood Cemetery and Oakwoods Common Park.
Some of the city's best known residents are buried here.

Historic homes with a neighborhood emphasis on preservation
Oakwood’s shaded streets, laid out in a grid pattern, have an established feel. “You can drive down Oakwood and see trees that you can’t even put your arms around,” says Jacquelyn Raynor, Realtor at Long & Foster. Homes from the mid-19th and early 20th centuries line the street, including Queen Anne, Victorian and Neoclassical Revivals. Many homes feature elaborate latticework, wraparound porches and colorful paint jobs. There are also smaller, hundred-year-old bungalows and New Traditional homes built in recent decades. “It’s a great example of the new mixed with the historic,” says Ryan Sabatini, a Broker with Rich Realty Group who has been selling in the area for five years.
Homeowners here have to abide by historic preservation restrictions. Any changes to a home's exterior must be approved by the city’s Historic Development Commission.
