Finding landmarks and outdoor fun in the Mount Penn Preserve
The seven-story Reading Pagoda was built atop Mount Penn in the early 1900s in the style of the Pagoda of Nagoya Castle in Japan. The towering red building is closed for renovation, but its grounds have long offered a place to enjoy fresh air and time outside. “The Pagoda area is good for hiking and city views,” says Marjorie DeJesus, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty who’s served the area for 17 years. The Pagoda is part of the Mount Penn Preserve, a more than 4,000-acre space packed with more than 40 miles of forested hiking, biking and equestrian trails between smaller parks and recreation centers. Go there to find:
Antietam Lake Park, a place to hike or fish around a scenic reservoir
City Park, a more manicured community park with plenty of sports courts, playground equipment and a bandshell
Egelman’s Ball Park, a youth baseball league hub in the woods
Attending Reading or Antietam schools
The parts of East Reading within city limits are in the Reading School District. Lower Alsace Township is served by the Antietam School District. Reading Senior High School offers vocational training through the Reading Muhlenberg Career & Technology Center, while Antietam High School partners with Berks Career & Technology Center.
Close to the Berks County seat and long-distance Philly commutes
You’ll need a car to get around the more rural areas of East Reading. Downtown Reading is within a few miles of home. “They’re working on a project for a train from Reading to Philadelphia that will let more people commute,” DeJesus says. “We’re about an hour away. The housing is very affordable, so it’s a good area to commute to work.” As commuter train access is still in the research stage, you can expect rush hour to impact drive time to Philadelphia, about 60 miles from home.
Cool rural dining not far from downtown Reading
A handful of specialty businesses lie along East Reading’s forested back roads. Reading Liederkranz is a cultural club that invites people to enjoy authentic German cuisine and live music in a clubhouse and outdoor pavilion. You can head deeper into the woods to find Stokesay Castle. The Tudor-inspired castle is a historic vacation home-turned-hotel, but you can also go there for a meal at The Knight’s Pub. For specialty stores and groceries, you might head into downtown Reading or suburban strip malls like Antietam Valley Shopping Center.
Pagoda events at the Mount Penn Preserve
The Pagoda is the focal point of many of the Mount Penn Preserve’s annual events, from acting as the finish line of a hillclimb car race to hosting Pagoda Patty, a pink-bow-wearing mascot, during her Groundhog Day prognostication. Reading Liederkranz’s Oktoberfest celebration invites members and non-members to meet up for drinking, German dining and other festivities.
