The Milroy neighborhood offers residents a place in the farmlands of Indiana, away from the hustle and bustle of living near a city. Plains, cornfields and campgrounds surround the area. Locals must travel to nearby Rensselaer for groceries, household necessities and school. "People are coming to town from all over," Melissa Smith, a genealogy specialist at the Rensselaer Library, says. "They have done a good job making it so people want to come here." Milroy is between 10 and 15 miles from Rensselaer, depending on which part of the neighborhood you are in.

Classic styles with rural charm
There are usually only a few homes in Milroy because it is in the farmlands. The houses are typically ranch-style, arts and crafts and bungalow homes, ranging from $200,000 to $400,000. More home styles and options are found closer to Rensselaer.

Little Creek Campground offers adventure
Little Creek Campground offers a place to go camping and includes a place to swim and fish and a local pizza shop nearby. Bicentennial Park offers picnicking, camping and a spot off the river for canoe landing. Residents can also head over to Brookside Park, which has a sports complex to host softball and baseball tournaments and new concessions. Foundation Park is a popular place for many locals because of its exercise equipment and the several soccer games played on Saturday mornings.

Nearby Rensselaer is the place for shopping and dining
Residents must drive up the highway to Rensselaer for shopping and dining. The prominent store locals visit is Strack & Van Til for grocery essentials. Walmart is close by for other household needs and necessities. eMbers Station Bistro is one of the popular local restaurants in the area, offering pub favorites and wood-fired pizzas. Royal Oak Family Restaurant is a go-to for residents, offering diverse dishes—Head to Northside Bar & Grill for a few drinks and some appetizers. Locals will leave the neighborhood to go to Fair Oaks Farm, just a few miles north of Rensselaer, for various events, dining and attractions. The food served is made from ingredients grown and harvested on the farm. Students will start their educational journeys at Van Rensselaer Elementary School, rated as B-plus by Niche. The school offers eLearning options for weather make-up days or canceled school days. The next stop is Rensselaer Middle School, a B-graded institution. The school provides various lifestyle classes, including a cooking course. The only way to get around is with a vehicle since no public transportation or bicycle lanes exist. Once residents get to Rensselaer, there is a community service bus to get around town.
Farmer's markets, live concerts and more
The Little Cousin Jasper Festival comes to Rensselaer every September for three days. There is live music, a farmer's market, activities for the children and adults and lil' king and queen announcements. Residents also mark their calendars for July when the Jasper County Fair comes to Rensselaer.
A haven for history and art
Downtown Rensselaer stands out for the artwork artists have added to the area, including paintings, murals and portraits. The paintings go into nearby parks, connected to downtown by walking trails and bridges. The artwork brings a modern look and flair to a downtown with historical features, including a statue of General Houston. The names of people who served in the Civil War are underneath the statue, and artifacts from that era are at the Rensselaer Library. Near Milroy Park, residents will find grand historic homes by the pedestrian connector. "The Jasper County Historical Society does a good job preserving the area's history while it continues to evolve," Smith says.
