Richmond

Preserving agricultural history

With a population of around 4,000 people, Berks County’s Richmond Township offers its residents the simplicity of a peaceful, slow-paced life on the countryside. Comprised of six unincorporated communities or "Villages," the township includes Kempville, Kirbyville, Moselem, Moselem Springs, Virginville and Walnuttown. When Berks County was established in 1752, Richmond was one of its first townships, known primarily for iron ore development and exceptional farms. “I’ve read that the Moselem, Rothermel and Heffner mines were among the most productive of the 18th century,” says Susan Miers Smith, digital content producer and reporter for the Berks County based publication, Reading Eagle. “The Moselem Forge was in operation as early as 1767”. Today, the community's deep agricultural roots are still evident in its expansive 24 square miles of lush farmland. Amidst the landscape, historic sites like the Moselem Farms grist mill and the subterranean Crystal Cave, filled with white stalactites, stalagmites and dripstones, stand as coveted landmarks.
