Moose and black bears call the Tunxis State Forest home
Within Hartland is the gorgeous Tunxis State Forest, which spans approximately 9,152 acres. Large stretches of unbroken forest make up the area, where wildlife like moose and black bears live. Cross-country skiing, fishing, hunting, hiking and mountain biking are all popular outdoor activities that can be experienced in the state forest. The Falls Brook Trail winds through the forest and those who explore it will come across numerous waterfalls, cascades and pools along its shady path. Pockets of wildflowers along a brook reward those who trek the trail. The Tunxis Trail is part of an extensive trail system comprising 19 trails and just over 83 miles of hiking. Within Tunxis State Forest is the Tunxis Forest Ski Cabin, a historic ski lodge at the end of Balance Rock Road. The lodge was built in 1937 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The 8-mile-long Barkhamsted Reservoir, Connecticut's largest drinking water reservoir, is along the neighborhood's east edge. Featured is the Saville Dam, one of the most photographed destinations in the area, with stone turrets rising from the reservoir that are reminiscent of a medieval castle. The area surrounding the dam serves as a popular place for running, with a wide shoulder and stone walkway. There's a 3.8-mile out-and-back route that starts at the dam and follows Seville Dam Road.
