Neighborhood housing mainly consists of ranch-style homes, tri-levels, and duplexes, most of which were built in the 1960s and ‘70s. Prices range from $100,000 to $200,000, but some sell for below $100,000 because they require renovation. There are also duplexes and some single-family homes on quarter-acre lots with three to four bedrooms and up to 2,000 square feet of living space. Along Carol Place, Holiday Drive and Bannister Drive are newer homes with contemporary traditional, quad-level and contemporary ranch styles from the 1990s to the 2010s. Sandy Hollow Golf Course opened to the public in 1929, making it the third-oldest course in Rockford. It is owned and maintained by the Rockford Park District. The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary has recognized the course's environmental efforts. “We’ve been Audubon certified for over 25 years,” says Ann Bloomfield, a golf professional at the course. “We have five beehives on the course and make our own honey that we sell in the clubhouse.” Extensive gardens and flowers surround the course’s clubhouse. “We’ve built a good community with our neighbors around the course. The people who own homes that back up to it do a good job keeping up their property lines.” Eckberg-Pine Manor Park is in the northeast part of the neighborhood and is mainly an open green space with a playground, picnic tables and an automatic spray pad that can be activated with the press of a button.Industrial sites north of Pine Manor
Owens Corning Rockford employs a few hundred people in the area. The plant, located near the railroad tracks a couple of miles north of the neighborhood, manufactures polystyrene foam board insulation for the construction industry. RMI Steel is down the road from Owens Corning and has been in the area for over 30 years. It’s a steel fabrication company that works with home builders, architects and businesses. It’s a little over 3 miles to get to Collins Aerospace, the fifth-largest employer in the Rockford area. Public school students are zoned for Rockford School District 205. Most begin at Hillman Elementary School, which has a C Niche grade and a 16-to-1 student-teacher ratio. Flinn Middle School is rated a C-minus. Jefferson High School is rated a C-plus and has over 2,000 students in grades 9 through 12. The school provides a transition support program for 9th graders called the Freshman Academy. The nearest public transportation access is on Alpine Road, where there are few stops for the Rockford Mass Transit District a mile and a half away. It’s about a 10-minute drive to the Chicago Rockford International Airport. O’Hare International Airport is 70 miles in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. Pine Manor is a car-dependent neighborhood with no public transportation stops on nearby major roads. There are also very few sidewalks along neighborhood streets. Since 1967, Beef-a-Roo has been part of the Rockford community, serving roast beef sandwiches, burgers and salads. They emphasize heart-healthy foods, offering steamed broccoli as a side. The interior is like a trip in a time machine, with old-time advertisements and leather-seat booths. 5 Coins Restaurant is open until 2 p.m. every afternoon, serving meals in a classic diner atmosphere. Grocery shopping is available at Schnucks on 11th Street, west of the golf course, and at ALDI, a couple of miles north on 20th Street.
