Waterfront community

Named for the pebbled coast of the river that borders it, Rocky River is a community on the shores of Lake Erie that abounds with waterfront recreation. Residents near the coast enjoy large lot sizes and access to private Parklawn Beach. Away from the water, classic homes sit on lots with well-maintained grass and sidewalks in front of them. “It has a small-town feel even though it’s about 21,000 people,” says Realtor Dawn Balog with Russell Real Estate Services, who lives in the area. “People are always out walking – with a dog if they have one – and many kids walk to school.” It might feel small, but residents are only 10 miles west of downtown Cleveland.

Variety of housing styles

Buyers can expect Colonial Revival properties, ranch-style homes and contemporary builds. English Tudor influences are common, particularly closer to Lake Erie, where roads follow the shoreline, and private neighborhoods provide beachfront access. “There are grand homes, but you’ll also find midrise condominiums and townhomes. There’s an array of opportunities for anyone at any stage to move into this community,” says Balog. While the median price in Rocky River is around $690,000, this reflects a range of options from $100,000 condos to multi-million-dollar lakeside estates.

Recreation near Lake Erie

Access to Lake Erie’s coast attracts those looking for waterside recreation. At Rocky River Park, visitors can picnic on the beach, and while there’s no swimming here, there’s an observation deck and weekly live music in the summer. Those who want water access can head to Wagar Beach. Kayaking, paddleboarding and canoeing are popular, and Bradstreet Landing Park has a spot where visitors can launch their vessels. Its brand-new pier is great for fishing or admiring the view.

There’s also outdoor activity away from the water. The residential Maplewood Avenue naturally extends into the entrance of Elmwood Park. As visitors drive in, they'll see a playground shaded by mature trees across from an open green space. There are also walking trails and two baseball diamonds. Westwood Country Club features an 18-hole golf course and, for members, a fitness center, tennis courts and a pool.

So many ways to get involved

Around City Hall are numerous community involvement opportunities. The Rocky River Recreation Department hosts various sports leagues, from pee-wee tennis to adult pickleball. Indoors, there are fitness and aquatic centers, basketball courts and more. In the summer, the community soaks in the sun by the pool, and for winter sports fans, the Hamilton Ice Arena hosts open skate times and hockey leagues. The Rocky River Senior Center sits in the same parking lot. Seniors can take part in activities like the River Singers, a walking group and scheduled outings. Behind the senior center, a community garden lets locals buy a plot and grow ingredients for dinner alongside their neighbors.
