Retirees and families move to Cypress Creek

Cypress Creek offers a laid-back lifestyle on the east side of Ruskin. An 18-hole golf course stretches behind some homes, and HOA-maintained recreation spaces are scattered throughout this planned community, which is about 26 miles south of Tampa. “A lot of retired people move here from the city so they can spend all day golfing,” says Candra Granville Mack, a Realtor with Charles Rutenberg Realty who has sold several homes in the area. With easy access to Interstate 75 and a few Hillsborough County Public Schools within walking distance, Cypress Creek also attracts families with parents who commute to the city for work. “My sister moved her family to the neighborhood for that exact reason,” Mack says. “It’s really the perfect place for people who can’t be too far from Tampa, but they still want to live somewhere that’s really quiet and calm.”

Some houses sit on the golf course

Ranch-style homes and New Traditionals sit along Cypress Creek’s sidewalk-lined streets. Houses typically have Spanish, Mediterranean or contemporary design influences. Palm trees often dot lawns, some of which back up to the golf course. Most houses have two to six bedrooms and attached garages. Smaller homes can cost between $270,000 and $450,000, while larger houses tend to range from about $500,000 to around $750,000.

Cypress Creek offers a natural and active environment

The neighborhood and Cypress Creek Golf Club’s 18-hole course are part of a cypress tree preserve, dotted with ponds and teeming with alligators, bald eagles and sandhill cranes. “The gators usually stay on the course, but some people will see the birds in their backyards and that’s always exciting,” Mack says. Residents aren’t required to join the club, but they do have to pay monthly HOA fees that help maintain neighborhood landscaping and recreational spaces, like playgrounds and basketball courts. Two clubhouses with swimming pools are in the community. In addition to sidewalks, the neighborhood has a few looped walking paths that wind between homes. “It’s an active community,” Mack says. “People are always out jogging with their dogs or walking with their families.” Cypress Creek is also home to the SouthShore Regional Library, which regularly hosts family story times and book discussions. Little Manatee River State Park, about 9 miles south, has hiking trails, kayak launches and campgrounds.

The neighborhood is next to Sun City Center

A few assisted living facilities are in Cypress Creek, located just west of Sun City Center, a 55+ community. “Cypress Creek itself is not age restricted, but it’s surrounded by places that are," Mack says. The neighborhood also has a strong medical presence, with several doctors’ offices and the HCA Florida South Shore Hospital.

Public elementary and middle schools are within walking distance

Hillsborough County Public Schools offer controlled open enrollment. Kids can attend Cypress Creek Elementary, which Niche grades a B-minus, and Beth Shields Middle, which gets a C. Students may continue to B-rated Earl J. Lennard High, where the Collegiate Academy magnet program gives students the opportunity to earn an associate degree, in addition to their high school diploma. The elementary and middle schools are in the northern part of the neighborhood, while the high school is less than 4 miles west.

Cypress Village has big-box stores and a German restaurant

Fast-food restaurants and strip malls line state Road 674, locally called Sun City Center Boulevard, on the neighborhood’s southern end. The Home Depot, Bealls and a few locally owned restaurants are in Cypress Village. Beer steins and German flags decorate the Old Castle Restaurant, where polka music plays as patrons enjoy sauerkraut and schnitzel. Grocery stores like Save A Lot, Walmart Supercenter and Publix are within 5 miles. Ruskin’s waterfront area, about 8 miles west, has seafood restaurants and marinas.

People golf cart around the neighborhood and take I-75 to Tampa

Some of Cypress Creek’s main roads have golf cart lanes. “People take them to the clubhouses, the golf course and sometimes even the shopping center,” Mack says. I-75 leads to Tampa, home to Tampa International Airport, financial firms and more healthcare centers. Commuters may face heavy traffic as they travel to and from the city. “It typically takes between 45 minutes and an hour, and sometimes even longer if there’s a wreck,” Mack says. Hillsborough Transit Authority provides bus service throughout the county.
