Saginaw's industrial sector in Northeast
Home to a GM factory, a railroad roundhouse, several trucking companies and other businesses, Northeast Saginaw is one of the most industrialized sectors of the city. The Saginaw River runs alongside the community, but the area isn’t much for water recreation, since local industries use the river. The neighborhood has a few stores and restaurants, though locals typically head elsewhere in the city to shop and dine, including in downtown Saginaw on the other side of I-675. Northeast's median household income is around $20,000, and most neighborhood homes cost under $100,000. First Ward Community Service, which has been serving the community since 1931, is bolstering an upward trajectory for the area. “We are here to help people. Since COVID, we haven’t been able to help much, but that will change soon because we recently received grants to upgrade our facility," says Corinne Colvin, an employee with FWCC since 1998. "We plan on getting back to giving out 30,000 pounds of food every Wednesday and providing prevention education programs for kids after school and during the summer.”
Northeast has seen recent development as home to Saginaw's Housing Commission headquarters.
Northeast's largest employer is the GM's Saginaw Metal Casting Operations center.

Modest houses and empty lots
Northeast housing consists of ranch-style homes, bungalows and Cape Cods built between the early and mid-1900s. Houses typically sit right next to each other on quarter-acre lots, some beside empty lots that are maintained or overgrown. “The city made our neighborhood a green zone,” says Colvin. “They aren’t building houses here anymore. They’re letting it go back to trees, grass and bushes.” Most homes have two to three bedrooms and sell for $25,000 to $75,000. Some early 2000s ranch-style homes range from $90,000 to $100,000. Railroad tracks run behind several backyards, and it’s not uncommon to hear the rumbling of trains at home.
Many of Northeast's ranch homes make for affordable renovation projects.
Bungalow homes provide Northeast with an affordable option for a two-story floor plan.
