Vilano Beach
The Bluebird of Happiness
The beach is the community’s beating heart. It has a steep drop-off and strong current, so it’s a good spot for surfing and skimboarding. The Surfside walkover is located just north of the town center and features a large parking lot with space for equestrian trailers. Horseback riding on the beach is allowed with a permit. The beach’s main access point on Anahma Drive features changing rooms, the Vilano Beach pavilion and a small playground for the kids. Nease Beachfront Park offers more parking and a small pier stretching into the marshes west of the Coastal Highway. The Bluebird of Happiness, a vintage local landmark, greets anglers on the Vilano Beach Pier, where they can cast their lines into the Tolomato River. Folks also gather here to catch great views of the sun rising and setting over St. Augustine. The pier has a small boat dock and pier area and is a popular spot for local fishing tournaments.Modern coastal homes on the beach
Residential streets in Vilano Beach are narrow and lined with shaggy palm trees and mature oaks. “The most common home style in Vilano Beach is the modern coastal,” Newcomer says. “A majority of these were constructed in the 1990s and early 2000s on 100 feet by 100 feet lots.” Inland homes measuring at least 1,500 square feet with three bedrooms list between $500,000 and $850,000. Houses closer to the water typically feature private docks that lead to the beach or the Tolomato River. These sell anywhere between $900,000 and $3 million. “Vilano Beach is a really great second home market,” says Newcomer. “You’ll have homebuyers live here six months of the year and rent it the other six months to offset the cost.”Monthly artisan market and skimboarding tournaments
The Vilano Beach Artisan Market welcomes over 20 local vendors on the third Saturday of every month. Booths line Vilano Road, known to locals as Main Street, with décor, artwork, plants and clothing. There’s typically a cash bar with select wines and beer, and a local musician plays as folks walk around. "A friend of mine sells jewelry at the market and she says it gets pretty busy," Shearer says. Vilano Beach also hosts the Florida Skimboarding Pro/Am Tournament every year in August, inviting professional and amateur skim-boarders from across the globe. Competitors range in age, with kids under eight years old to adults over 40 competing.Seafood restaurants on the water
Cap’s on the Water, a popular seafood spot overlooking the Tolomato River, features patio seating with string lights. “It’s really big, but it’s built around all these beautiful trees, so it’s also very private,” Newcomer says. “Their vanilla grouper is really popular with diners.” The menu also includes crab cake dinners, jambalaya and sesame-seared tuna. The Reef is on the oceanside of Vilano Beach. It offers white-tablecloth dining with cocktails and fish options, including grouper and Atlantic salmon. Other restaurant options include 180 Vilano Grill and Pizza, which has tacos, pizza, burgers and pasta. Pesca offers a full bar with rooftop views. “It has great views of the ocean, homes and lighthouse,” Newcomer says. Metalartz sells ornate glass jellyfish and hand-crafted earrings, and next door is Publix.St. Augustine High features an Academy of Aviation and Aerospace

Water travel is also popular along the Tolomato River, and many locals bike up and down the community.
