Midtown St. Joseph is filled with 19th-century history
With businesses, stories and architecture that date back to the 19th century, Midtown St. Joseph is known for keeping the past alive. This has drawn many new residents in recent years, along with the promise of lower-than-average prices for historic homes. “We get a lot of retirees and people working from home,” says Kim Schutte, the city’s historic preservation planner. “Our overall cost of living is really low.” Regular events, and convenient shopping and dining, are also deciding factors for would-be residents.
Historic Victorian and homes are available
Lots are typically less than a quarter of an acre with minimal lawns. Garages and driveways are uncommon, making street parking the norm. The median construction year in Midtown hovers in the 1910s, meaning that many of the houses have had or will require renovation. “For a lot of people, it’s a bit of a project,” says Schutte. “But they’re willing to take that on because of what they get for their money.” Cape Cods and bungalows are priced from the $10,000s to the low $200,000s. Larger Victorian and American Foursquare houses range from the $50,000s to the high $200,000s.
Guests can visit the home of Jesse James
In addition to displaying artifacts and exhibits, the Jesse James Home and Museum is also where the famed outlaw was shot and killed in 1882. Visitors can even see the fatal bullet hole still in the wall. The Wyeth Tootle Mansion was built in 1879 and designed to look like German castles on the Rhine River. A wooded path leads to the top of William and Louis Park, where visitors can enjoy a scenic view of the city.
The Hi-Ho Tavern has been open since 1882
The J.C. Wyatt House is an old-fashioned steak house in a renovated Victorian mansion with elegant décor and outdoor seating. The Hi-Ho Tavern has been working in some capacity since 1882. Originally a saloon, today it serves guests tavern food in a relaxed atmosphere. The East Hills Shopping Center has a variety of department stores, services and franchise restaurants. Dollar General is nearby for groceries.
The Apple Blossom Festival is celebrated every spring
Complete with floats, live entertainment and candy throwing, the Apple Blossom Festival has been a spring mainstay in St. Joseph’s since 1924. Locals celebrate the season and crown an Apple Blossom Queen yearly.
Locals cheer for Central High School's football team
Students can begin at Carden Park Elementary, which has a B-minus from Niche, before heading to Truman Middle, which has a C. B-rated Central High School brings the community together with its athletics department. “On Friday nights, everyone comes to watch the football team,” says Schutte. “It’s a very Midwestern thing.”
Interstate 29 gets commuters to Kansas City
Interstates 229 and 29 are the main highways in the area. They lead to Kansas City, about 60 miles away and an hour’s drive. Go St. Joe provides public transit, with several bus stops on Messanie and Olive streets.
