Preserved historic homes and churches
As a historic district, Shaw is bound by strict preservation guidelines that keep the character of its historical homes pristine. "100-year-old brick homes are par for the course in Shaw," says Kavanah, "And the ordinances help maintain the neighborhood's historic aesthetic." Two-bedroom twins sell for around $175,000 to $250,000. Meanwhile, three- and four-bedroom single-family listings are more likely to be priced from the low $300,000s to the high $400,000s. Premier streets like Flora Place in the heart of Shaw feature the neighborhood's more grand estates. Many feature Colonial Revival and American Foursquare architecture with 2,500 to 3,500 square feet of living space, four to five bedrooms and landscaped quarter-acre lots. They typically range from $450,000 to $550,000, though some have fetched up to $1 million. Although home prices in Shaw tend to be higher than what's typical in St. Louis, that doesn't deter homebuyers as there is typically just one month of supply in the neighborhood. The historic nature of Shaw is evident through the neighborhood's churches, some of which have been holding services for more than 100 years. St. Margaret of Scotland, a Catholic church built in 1899, stands out with its large stature of stone siding, majestic cathedral doors and stained glass windows. South City Church is another longtime house of worship with a beautiful display of masonry. Olive Branch Presbyterian Church used the building for 125 years until merging with South City Church.
Country's oldest botanical garden and St. Louis' second-largest park
Missouri Botanical Garden, the oldest in the country, has drawn visitors to its 79 acres of flora since 1859, when Henry Shaw founded it. It's made up of flowers and trees from around the world arranged along waterways, around winding walking paths and into complex hedge mazes. Rising out of the landscape is Climatron, a 70-foot-tall climate-controlled dome that houses a tropical conservatory lush with orchids, coconut trees and cacao plants. Not satisfied with launching an acclaimed botanical garden, Henry Shaw gifted the city 276 acres to create Tower Grove Park. As St. Louis' second-largest park, Tower Grove features ponds and pavilions, making for one of the most charming walks in St. Louis.
Magnet school with hands-on learning
Next to the botanical garden is Shaw's lone St. Louis Public Schools campus: Mullanphy Botanical Garden Investigative Learning Center. The magnet elementary school, which gets a C-minus grade from Niche, focuses on learning through investigative, hands-on activities in the school's science lab, greenhouse and garden. Children in Shaw who don't go the magnet school route attend D-plus-graded Adams Elementary or C-minus-graded Mann Elementary. They'll go on to Long Middle and Roosevelt High, both graded a C-minus and no more than 3.5 miles from Shaw.Festivals at Missouri Botanical Garden
The Missouri Botanical Garden keeps its calendar full all year with music festivals, artisan markets and light displays, making it one of the biggest draws in St. Louis. One of the most popular events is the Historic Shaw Art Fair, held on Tower Grove Avenue and Flora Place just outside the botanical garden, featuring more than 100 artists and their work from across the country.Access to MetroBus and I-44
Commuters have easy access to Interstate 44, which runs east and west on the neighborhood's north side. The interstate leads directly to Downtown St. Louis, about 4 miles northeast. Folks can also get around by taking a MetroBus, with bus stops in most areas of Shaw.New corner restaurants popping up
While primarily residential, Shaw is seeing new businesses setting up shop on its street corners, like burger joint Bailey's Range, known for its artisan burgers and Irish cream shakes. Locals have more dessert options over at Ices Plain & Fancy, including German chocolate ice cream churned with the help of liquid nitrogen, creating silky smooth bites. Another favorite is Sasha's on Shaw, a wine bar with a cozy outdoor patio. Shoppers can stop by Shaw Market for a quick snack and grab all their groceries from Ruler Foods.Crime rates in Shaw
Though crimes in Shaw appear to gradually rise each year, the neighborhood's overall crime rate is 54% lower than all of St. Louis. In 2023, the St. Louis Police Department reported 480 property crimes in Shaw, up from 446 in 2022 and 364 in 2021. There were also 55 violent crimes reported in 2023, up from 44 in 2022 and 48 in 2021.
