Saint Pete Beach is all about relaxation

What homeowners often pay for condos and Spanish Revival homes

The island is filled with low- and mid-rise condos, many from the 1970s and 1980s. They can vary wildly in amenities and prices, ranging from the mid-$100,000s for a standard space to around $1.5 million for a luxury unit near the water. HOA fees can run from $600 to $4,000 per month. There are also brightly colored cottages and bungalows as well as some ranch-style and Spanish Revival homes from the 1950s and 1960s. These single-family houses start in the upper $100,000s, but can reach about $1.8 million. Luxury estates close to the water often sell between $2 million and $7 million. The area tends to be more expensive than nearby Treasure Island and Saint Petersburg, but less expensive than Tierra Verde.

The community gives people a taste of island life

Island living can last forever. “People often think of St. Pete Beach as simply a vacation spot, but it’s truly a lifestyle destination,” says Johane Bucaille, the broker associate with La Belle Vie Signature Group at Coldwell Banker Realty. Homes can have indoor-outdoor living spaces with resort-style pools and fire pits, and some houses on the water have docks. Roads are lined with palm trees, and most residential streets have sidewalks. While many people have cars, others use golf carts to get around, with some parking lots even offering cart-only spaces. Biking is also popular, and main roads like Gulf Boulevard have striped bike lanes. Residents tend to enjoy social outings and nightlife spots. “It has a village feel, with a strong sense of community, Bucaille says.

Beaches are the city's biggest draw

The island has several white-sand beaches that carry different vibes. Its namesake, Saint Pete Beach, is the largest. It’s close to bars and restaurants and is full of activity, which can sometimes make parking a challenge. Pass-a-Grille Southwest Beach, on the tip of the island, is quieter, with more room to spread out. It has a fishing pier and is a popular spot for shelling. Upham Beach Park has a volleyball court. There are also dog-friendly beaches where furry friends can run around. If you want to hit the water, Egan Park has a public boat ramp, or you can dock at a place like Pass-A-Grille Marina. No matter where you go, you’ll have great views of the water and the sky. “It’s a ritual here: people gather every evening to watch the sunset,” Bucaille says.

There are many places to eat and have a drink

There are restaurants and bars up and down the island. Options include:

  • Shrimpys Waterfront, which serves Cajun dishes and hosts live music
  • La Croisette, which puts a French twist on classic American breakfast and lunch
  • Paradise Grille, a counter-service spot with quick bites
  • Brass Monkey, a Maryland-themed pub with specialty crab cakes
  • Hurricane Seafood Restaurant, which opened in 1977 and has a rooftop bar
For groceries and other essentials, people usually have to leave the island. There’s a Publix, a Winn-Dixie and a Walmart just across the bridge in South Pasadena.

People have an easy drive to downtown Saint Petersburg

Gulf Boulevard is the only road that travels north-south on the island’s upper half. The highway often gets backed up, especially during the area’s busy season. State roads 682 and 693 connect Saint Pete Beach with the mainland. Downtown Saint Petersburg is around 10 miles from the island’s northern tip and about 12 miles from its southern one. You can drive there or take the SunRunner rapid transit bus. The Suncoast Beach Trolley heads up the coast to other beaches in the region. Tampa International Airport is roughly 30 miles away.

There's plenty to do away from sandy beaches

While relaxing on the beach is part of many residents’ daily routine, it is not the only way to have fun on the island. You can:

  • Journey into Saint Petersburg to visit The Dali Museum
  • Take a dolphin-watching or fish-feeding cruise
  • Go parasailing with Suncoast Watersports
  • Take photos at the Don CeSar hotel, known as the “Pink Palace”
