Living in San Angelo's cowboy-friendly Riverside
Located on the north side of San Angelo, Riverside is bounded by the highly trafficked U.S. Route 87 and the northern dam of the North Concho River. Although the neighborhood sits next to what appears to be a large lake, the area’s climate and landscape aren’t conducive to the presence of abundant water. “We’re not entirely flat, as we’re part of the southern edge of the rolling plains,” says Carl White, San Angelo’s Parks and Recreation Director. “But we could use a dump of water. We were awarded the ‘Fickle Finger of Fate’” from Laugh-In because the lake burned,” he adds, referring to the 1970s sketch comedy show. The particular incident that earned San Angelo that dubious honor was in 1970, when the dried grass at the bottom of the empty O.C. Fisher Reservoir caught on fire, thus the “burning lake” component. Humor aside, Riverside embraces a traditional ranching lifestyle, and industrial wholesalers and other farming retailers line the highway that make up much of the neighborhood. The area hosts the annual San Angelo Stock Show & Rodeo, a city staple. In addition to having an old-school West Texas attitude, most residents identify as Hispanic. Local art, eateries and educational institutions celebrate this Hispanic cowboy culture.

Annual San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo and local Lily Fest
Riverside is home to the highly anticipated San Angelo Stock Show & Rodeo, held annually at the local fairgrounds. The event, which includes a carnival among its other cowboy-themed events, brings in more than 150,000 visitors. “You have people of all different ages showing their cattle and other livestock. And then people of all walks of life selling their goods and crafts,” White says. “Picture a regional state fair with carnival food, games and rides. The rodeo and stock show portion provide a lot of scholarships for the kids.”
About 3 miles south of the fairgrounds is the International Waterlily Collection, which also draws a sizable crowd for Lily Fest. “After the 1936 flood, they did a bunch of rock work and added a reflection pond that was converted into a waterlily pond,” White says. “Kenneth C. Landon was a hybridizer who made the collection what it is today. There are temperate and tropical waterlilies, the temperate kind being smaller and low-to-the-water and the tropical kind growing taller and the size of a dinner plate. The primary season to see them is September, which is when the festival is.” Lily Fest is a free family-friendly event with food and drink vendors.
Local eateries, art centers and churches on Chadbourne
Warehouses, farm equipment shops and small convenience stores pepper both Route 87 and Chadbourne Street. Residents can head to Riverside’s south side to run errands at Walmart and grab food from several fast-food eateries and local Mexican restaurants. El Rincon De San Miguel is a popular option, with colorful decor and a taco bar. Nearby, Ice House is a small neighborhood bar. “Also in this area, The Chicken Farm Art Center is an old motel that was converted into an artist's living space and studio,” White says. “It’s open all week. You can get handmade pottery, paintings and copper art pieces. And next door is the fanciest restaurant in town called The Silo.” Only open on the weekends, Roots at the Silo offers a rotating seasonal menu of upscale Southern comfort food.
Centrally located on Chadbourne Street, San Angelo Cowboy Church is a Western rancher-themed church where cowboy hats are welcomed and murals of horse-riders and scriptures adorn the walls. The church hosts family-friendly cowboy-themed events, including riding, racing and roping round-ups.
Riverside’s ranch-style homes sit on an acre or two
Situated between the busy U.S. Route 87 and the business-lined Chadbourne Street are Riverside’s ranch-style homes of varying sizes spaced far apart from neighbors. Homes ranging from quaint 1,000-square-foot houses to more sprawling 2,000-square-foot structures might sit on an acre or two off straight, unmarked streets. Price tags generally range from $130,000 to $300,000. Buyers can also purchase land, from a half-acre for $30,000 to 2 acres for $50,000. Houses located farther from the highway are classified as “quiet” or "calm" on Soundscore, which measures how loud an area is due to environmental factors.

Recreation at Kirby Park, San Angelo State Park and Riverside
Kirby Park is Riverside’s local park, situated on the neighborhood’s south side. Popular features include a playground, a street hockey rink, a skate park, a walking trail and fishing access in the North Concho River, which feeds into O.C. Fisher Reservoir. “The dam and lake were created to keep the city from flooding after the major floods in the ‘30s and ‘50s. The water’s only at 5% capacity. It’s so low that the boat ramps don’t even go into the water, and it’s been like that since I’ve been here,” White says. The lake sits next to San Angelo State Park, which provides 7,700 acres of camping sites and trails, including a child-friendly Dinosaur Trail. “It’s as cool as it sounds because you don’t expect it. It’s in an intermittent stream bed, with foot imprints that have been preserved,” White says. “There’s also a small herd of longhorn cattle and buffalo on the north side of the lake. But the state park is mostly popular for the 50 miles of equestrian, biking and hiking trails.”
Riverside also provides golf and social gatherings at the Riverside Golf Club. The semi-private club features an 18-hole course and a grill that some members boast is the best in town.

There are six fixed routes, including routes for both the ASU campus and Goodfellow Air Force Base. For more distant travel, San Angelo Regional Airport is a 15-mile drive south.
