Bordering Leon Springs and Interstate 10, the rolling landscape of Cross Mountain covers two nature parks and several subdivisions, northwest of Downtown San Antonio. It’s across the highway from upscale living at The Dominion, a well-known gated community. “Cross Mountain is in the heart of Texas Hill Country. It’s close to the city, and less than 3 miles from Fiesta Texas and shopping at The Rim,” says Phillip Lopez, Realtor/leader of the Lopez Group with Real Broker. “There are several spacious communities and lots of acreage-type properties. Many of the neighborhoods don’t have an HOA.” Some subdivisions in the area include Cresta Bella, Terra Falls, Stonewall Ranch, Steeplebrook, Cross Mountain Ranch, Walnut Pass, Crownridge and parts of Leon Springs.

Lopez explains that Leon Springs has a lot of traditional Hill Country homes, typically ranch-style houses on large lots. The average price point for homes in Leon Springs is $490,000. He adds, “Some of the properties have great views overlooking the Hill Country.” The price point for homes in Cross Mountain is higher, with recent closing sale prices ranging from $400,000 for a single-story, stone New Traditional Tudor with 2,300 square feet of living space in the Walnut Pass subdivision, to $2.3 million for an estate-like property with 8,900 square feet of living space in the Crownridge subdivision.

“Walnut Pass offers an attractive opportunity to homebuyers for affordable housing within proximity to some of San Antonio’s most affluent neighborhoods, and access to Northside Independent schools known for their commitment to academic excellence,” says Heather Hart, Realtor with JPAR. “It appeals to educated professionals seeking a blend of suburban tranquility and career opportunities, since it offers convenient access to both Boerne and San Antonio.” She explains that homes in the community are priced approximately in the $375,000 to $490,000 range, and follow a traditional architectural style with stone, brick and cement siding. The neighborhood has recreational amenities, including a park and basketball court, further enhancing its appeal to families seeking community involvement.

Depending on where you live in Cross Mountain, students have a few school paths they can follow. Students living in Walnut Pass can attend Aue Elementary, Garcia Middle and Brandeis High School. Those living in Leon Springs can attend McAndrew Elementary, Rawlinson Middle and Clark High School. Other school paths include Leon Springs Elementary or Ellison Elementary, Garcia Middle and Brandeis High, and Aue Elementary, Garcia Middle and O’Connor High School. Brandeis High, Clark High and O’Connor High are all graded A on Niche, and offer advanced academics including Advanced Placement, Dual Credit and the UT OnRamps dual enrollment program.

Head over to H-E-B or Walmart Supercenter for your grocery shopping. You don’t have far to drive far for popular retail shopping destinations — The Rim Shopping Mall and La Cantera Mall are less than 10 minutes away by car. When it’s time for a bite to eat, Leon Springs has a variety of restaurants for fine dining or a casual meal. For upscale Italian dining, stop by Aldo’s Ristorante Italiano. You’ll find a more relaxed Italian dining experience at Fralo’s. Known for their pizzas, you can order one of several signature pizzas, or build your own 12- or 15-inch pizza. Papa Nacho’s Cantina is the place to go for great enchiladas, tacos and other Tex-Mex favorites. The Point Park is a food truck park that hosts a rotating roster of local food trucks. Grab your meal from a food truck of your choice, and eat at a picnic table under the shade of the surrounding trees.

Spanning roughly 600 acres of land at the southern end of the Texas Hill Country, Freidrich Wilderness Park is both a public park and a nature preserve. Since it’s home to rare birds, the park is internationally known for bird watching. It’s also home to terrestrial orchids, steep hills and deep canyons. Spend the day hiking on any of the park’s 10 miles of nature trails of varying difficulty, or participate in environmental programs to learn more about the park’s vegetation and wildlife. Interested in spending the day riding rollercoasters and other amusement park fun? Six Flags Fiesta Texas is a 10-minute drive away.

Escape the bustle of city living in one of the many communities in Cross Mountain, the heart of Texas Hill Country.
