An active lifestyle in northern San Antonio
Residents can enjoy the great outdoors or spend the day shopping and dining with a home in Oxbow, a conveniently located neighborhood northwest of Downtown San Antonio. "It's a really nice area. UTSA is right up the street, and you're really close to La Cantera and all the shopping there," says local Realtor Monica Anguiano with Realty One Group Emerald. "It's great for people just starting out buying a home or families who want to be in the Northside school district." Situated between two major highways and a short distance from popular shopping destinations, Oxbow offers a mix of housing, from modest townhouses to single-family homes. More affordable homes than nearby neighborhoods make Oxbow popular with first-time buyers, while the location in the highly-rated Northside Independent School District makes this low-key neighborhood popular with families.
Relax at home or enjoy the great outdoors in Oxbow.
Starter homes and spacious yards in Oxbow
Buyers can find several types of homes hugging the tree-lined streets in Oxbow. Ranch-style homes are the most common, but Tudor and contemporary features can be found on homes throughout the neighborhood. Other homes stand out with prominent stone and brick exteriors. And though two-story models are rare in Oxbow, they occasionally adorn the streetscape. On the neighborhood's northern edge, plenty of duplexes are available, with built-in garages jutting out in front. Sidewalks run parallel to the streets, offering walkability throughout the community. Most homes have spacious yards where residents can play catch or have a backyard barbecue. Two-bedroom townhouses cost around $160,000, while three-bedroom single-family homes often cost between $250,000 and $325,000.
Preparing for the future at Northside schools
Students might attend Carnahan Elementary School, Stinson Middle School and Brandeis High School. Carnahan and Stinson receive B ratings from Niche, while Brandeis is rated an A overall. Brandeis High serves approximately 2,800 students with a student-teacher ratio of 18-to-1. The school has been around since 2008 and is named after former Supreme Court Justice Louis D. Brandeis. Students can take career courses in architecture, cybersecurity, law enforcement and several other subjects. The school also offers an Air Force JROTC program, which includes a drill team, spirit squad, rocketry team and academic bowl team.
Earl Scott Pond sits right along Leon Creek Greenway.
Cast a line or take a hike along the greenway
Residents have access to plenty of outdoor recreation in and around Oxbow. Rohde Park is a small neighborhood green space with a shaded playground and several picnic tables. The park also has a trailhead for the Leon Creek Greenway, a 20-mile paved multi-use trail. Along the route, residents can stop at Earl Scott Pond, a popular spot for fishing that wildlife officials regularly stock. Home to catfish, perch and bass, the pond is an excellent place for kids to learn. Residents can also take the greenway north to Bamberger Nature Park, a large park with several hiking and biking trails that meander through the desert landscape.
Easy access to San Antonio's shopping destinations
Oxbow residents are just minutes away from some of the most popular shopping and dining destinations in San Antonio. The Rim is 7 miles north on Interstate 10 and features stores like Bass Pro Shops, JCPenney, Dick's Sporting Goods and Saks OFF 5th. The Rim is also home to the Santikos Entertainment Palladium movie theater. The Shops at La Cantera is just a 4-mile drive up Babcock Road and is home to stores like Dillard's, Nordstrom and Macy's. Anguiano says there are several popular restaurants here. "There's a bunch of restaurants in the area. You have Grimaldi's Pizzeria, which is great for families. And there's some high-end restaurants like Ruth's Chris or Perry's Steakhouse," she says. Whiskey Cake Kitchen & Bar is another recommendation of Anguiano's, known for its rustic chic interior and modern take on comfort food like chicken and waffles or deviled eggs. Residents can make the 3.5-mile drive east to Interstate 10 for groceries, with stores like H-E-B and Sam's Club set up along the highway.
Commuting through San Antonio
Oxbow is tucked between the 1604 loop and Interstate 10, giving residents easy access to San Antonio's major highways. I-10 is about 3.5 miles east of the neighborhood, while 1604 is about 3.5 miles west. Residents have a 16-mile drive to downtown along I-10. There are a few bus stops just east of the neighborhood on Spring Time Drive, but most people in the neighborhood drive to their destinations.
