Location means everything to Springvale. While the neighborhood’s biggest draw might be its proximity to the neighboring Lackland Air Force Base – one of San Antonio’s largest employers – Springvale also offers a suburban life centered around several shopping centers that offer a variety of chain and local restaurants, alongside family-friendly attractions like movie theaters, escape rooms and both the San Antonio Aquarium and SeaWorld. Most locals can bike or walk to an H-E-B or the neighborhood park, while also having quick access to Interstate 410 and Highway 90, making it convenient to get around the rest of San Antonio. All of Westside seems to be expanding in terms of housing, including Springvale. “This area of town has seen such a big boom in the market recently,” says Vicki Collier, a Realtor at Keller Williams Legacy. “Really, it’s because people who work in Lakeland, especially the base, find it convenient to live close by, plus homes are more affordable than those closer to downtown.”

The inventory boom bringing new style to Springvale
According to Collier, the construction of new builds won’t be changing for awhile around the Westside. However, Springvale seems to stand still. The most common style of home here are one-story midcentury modern homes on smaller lots, framed with iron fences. Prices often range from $175,000 and $200,000.

Walk or bike to Allen Elementary and Rayburn Middle Schools
Springvale students in the Northside Independent School District can attend Allen Elementary School and Rayburn Middle School, which have B-minus and C-plus Niche scores, respectively. Jay High School, graded B-minus by Niche, provides advanced placement and dual credit courses and allows students to earn industry-based certifications through Career Technical Education programs. For those interested in continuing their education after graduation, Northwest Vista College is roughly 10 miles away. Getting around and out of Springvale
Public transportation is operated by VIA Metropolitan Transit and is available on major roads like Springvale Drive. Interstate 410 and Highway 90 provide routes around the rest of San Antonio – including the San Antonio International Airport, roughly 17 miles away. Like the rest of San Antonio, these major throughways experience relatively high congestion. For immediate medical care, Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center and Methodist Hospital are 4 and 11 miles away, respectively.

From Westover Marketplace to Traders Village flea market
There’s a convenient H-E-B a mile away for groceries. However, locals have to drive a little ways for everything else, Collier adds. Westover Marketplace offers both Target and Walmart off Texas 151 Access Road. Sprinkled along I-10 are multiple Tex-Mex restaurants like Hacienda Vallarta Mexican Restaurant and El Tequila Mexican Restaurant & Bar. Located in the San Antonio Marketplace shopping center, San Antonio’s Incredible Pizza Company is well-known for its go-karts and games, as well as its buffet, and just across the highway is Golden Wok, a local staple for classic Chinese cuisine. Traders Village on Loop 410 is a sprawling, weekend-only flea market with more than just food and craft vendors. Inside its main building, there’s live entertainment and even a free dinosaur museum for the kids.

Stay fit indoors and outdoors around Springvale
Multiple gyms and fitness centers, like Gold’s Gym next to H-E-B, offer indoor equipment and fitness classes. For those looking to stay active outdoors, Gateway Hills Golf Course and Medina Base Park are 2 miles away. The larger Pearsall Park, 4 miles away, consists of a disc golf course, skate park and obstacle course; however, its most popular feature is its covered playground and splash pad. Vast amounts of rural farmland, sprawling nature parks, shooting ranges and the Golf Club of Texas are 11 miles west on US-90. Although there might not be a ton to do within walking distance, Springvale has ample options within a 10-mile radius. On State Highway 151, the indoor amusement park – Main Event West – features a thrilling rope course and bowling lanes. Seven miles away, sea creatures await at SeaWorld San Antonio or the San Antonio Aquarium. For those who’d rather read about sea life, Johnston Branch Library in La Ventana – the neighborhood south of Valley High North and Springvale – has a wide selection of fiction and non-fiction novels. The library will often host group events open to the community. For baseball enthusiasts, attending a Missions game at Nelson W. Wolff Municipal Stadium is a true highlight of life in Springvale.
