Suburban San Antonio neighborhood split between county and city

In Aesop’s well-known fable “The Town Mouse and The Country Mouse,” a proud mouse hailing from the city visits his cousin in the countryside. The country mouse then visits the city, and subsequently decides that he is content with his rural lifestyle. The moral of the story is that while each lifestyle has pros and cons, each mouse had to make compromises and choose which life was more personally fulfilling. Tucked in the Northwestern region of San Antonio, the small pocket community of Trophy Ridge offers residents something akin to the same choice: half the neighborhood is served by the city and subject to city taxes, while residents in the southern half, which sits in Bexar County, get a tax break but must privately contract out their services. Still, both halves enjoy Trophy Ridge’s family-centric suburban feel, shared amenities and community events. Additionally, the neighborhood offers proximity to shopping, local dining and many of San Antonio’s biggest attractions, like SeaWorld and the Lackland Air Force Base. And while the difference in lifestyle is not as drastic as in the age-old tale, residents of Trophy Ridge can decide which part of the community suits them best, much like the mice in Aesop’s fable.

Neo-Traditional homes offer an established feel

Developed over the last two decades, Trophy Ridge features an orderly row of residential streets that branch off from Rousseau Road, the neighborhood’s main road that bisects the community. Home styles reflect the era in which they were built; New Traditional architecture is the most prevalent throughout the neighborhood, though homes take on a variety of influences. While most houses here have stone, brick or vinyl siding, stylistic elements range from Craftsman-like exposed beams and brackets to French cottage-inspired keystone detailing. “They started building in the early 2000s, so there’s no longer new construction in Trophy Ridge,” says Kellie Daniels, a local Realtor with Coldwell Banker. “That makes the neighborhood feel a little more established.” Most homes are two-story with three to five bedrooms and two- to three-car garages. Prices typically range between $250,000 and $360,000, and homebuyers should expect to pay $500 annual HOA dues.

Community-centric recreational amenities

The centrally located Trophy Ridge Recreation Center is the neighborhood’s epicenter for recreation and community events. The center features a basketball court available from dawn to dusk and a Junior Olympic-sized swimming pool. Spanning 3 to 5 feet in depth, the pool has lap lanes and serves as a hub of activity during the summer months, as kids swim and adults relax on the resort-style furniture. The pool also hosts the Torpedoes youth swim team. Part of the Alamo Area Swim Summer League, the Torpedoes is composed of Trophy Ridge kids aged 6 through 18 who practice at the pool for six weeks in the summer. Residents are also close to a few golf courses, such as the public Hill Country Golf Club and the private Briggs Ranch Golf Club, as well as major area attractions like SeaWorld.

Conveniently located close to commerce along Potranco Road

Trophy Ridge’s main route, Rousseau Road, funnels residents onto Potranco Road right by Loop 1604. The intersection is a commercial corridor clustered with fast-food chains, grocery stores and national retailers. “Potranco Road is undergoing a lot of growth,” Daniels says. “That entire area has lots of shopping, restaurants and major anchor stores, which makes it very convenient.” An H-E-B Plus! is located right off Rousseau Road and sits next to stores like Kohl’s and Cato Fashions, as well as fast-casual eateries like Wing Daddy’s Sauce House. On the other side of Loop 1604, The Shops at Dove Creek include grocers like Walmart and Costco, and familiar retailers like Old Navy and T.J. Maxx. Potranco Village is another shopping plaza along the intersection, with banks and dining chains like Whataburger.

Traffic on major thoroughfares to improve

Trophy Ridge’s location puts residents close to Loop 1604, but also other major thoroughfares like Highways 151, 90 and 121. “The convenient area is popular for the military who work at Lackland,” Daniels says of the Air Force base about 10 miles east of the neighborhood, though she says that traffic can be a concern. “They’re trying to widen Potranco Road and make it better, but be prepared to hit traffic during rush hour.”
