Golf course living
Golf resort living is on the table at Laurel Oak Estates, a gated, meticulously landscaped community within the Laurel Oak Country Club. "It's one of the more prestigious communities in Sarasota," says Angela Adams, a realtor with Michael Saunders & Company. "It's a coveted Florida lifestyle. They have everything you need." An array of amenities complemented by a pair of championship golf courses draws homebuyers to this upscale subdivision. While many who live in the community become club members, membership is not a requirement of living here. The community spans 813 acres and encompasses over 400 homes and villas. Much of the community is surrounded by heavily wooded areas, lush vegetation and wildlife that preserve the area's natural beauty.
Getting around
Residents can easily access Interstate 75 via Bee Bridge Road, making commutes simple. Meanwhile, plenty of Breeze Transit bus stops are dotted along Bee Bridge Road, making it easy to get to surrounding areas by public transportation.
Country club views await
Laurel Oak Estates is a gated community with security working around the clock. There are over 400 custom-built estates built between 1990 and 2005 that range in size from 1,900 to more than 5,000 square feet and range in price from $795,000 to $2.8 million. Typical features include decorative tile roofs, which the homeowners' association mandates. "A lot of HOAs require certain architectural features for consistency," says Adams, who notes that there is a significant amount of overall diversity in the home styles due to them being constructed by different home builders.
The homes include large yards and private driveways and feature waterfront or golf course views on land that has been impeccably landscaped. "The grounds are absolutely stunning," says Adams. "You can tell it's a well-cared-for community, which makes it very desirable." Care also went into constructing the overall design of the community, as there are plenty of natural green spaces surrounding the homes and golf courses. "Although it is a gated community, there are a lot of preserve areas. I see deer running around every time I go there," says Adams. "And just like any Florida area with freshwater access, you'll see birds, fish, alligators—all the regular wildlife."
Education in Laurel Oak Estates
Children in the area attend Lakeview Elementary School, which has an overall Niche grade of A and is ranked the eighth-best public elementary school in Sarasota County. Next, kids attend McIntosh Middle School, which has an overall Niche grade of A-minus and is ranked the eleventh-best public middle school in Sarasota County. Teenagers attend Sarasota High School, which has an overall Niche grade of A-minus and is ranked the fourth-best public high school in Sarasota County.
Golf clubs and tennis racquets
Golf courses are a dime a dozen in Florida, but the two in Laurel Oak Estates are anything but typical. PGA legend Gary Player designed one, and Rees Jones, a world-famous golf course architect, designed the other. A 508-yard, par-5 closing hole highlights the Player course, while the Jones course closes with a par-4 dogleg surrounded by water along one side. Both courses host regular men's and women's league play, tournaments and summer camps. Laurel Oak Country Club hosts the state's only U.S. Kids Golf Academy.
Additional amenities include a state-of-the-art tennis center with 12 courts, six pickleball courts and a Junior Olympic-sized, heated swimming pool. The swim center is home to a community swim team and hosts summer camps and events like "dive-in movies" for kids. Social events are a big part of living in the community and most of them take place at the 45,000-square-foot clubhouse. The clubhouse dining room is typically the place to be, as it hosts breakfasts, brunches and buffets centered around the holidays, as well as wine and trivia-themed dinners throughout the year. "It's a very diverse community with many age groups," says Adams. "There's families and retirees, and they have an active social calendar."
Plenty to eat at Bee Ridge Square
The Bee Ridge Square Mall and the Publix-anchored Centergate Village provide shopping options roughly two miles away. Plenty of fast food and fast-causal favorites are close at hand when residents get hungry. Locals can dine at Miller's Ale House, First Watch, Sushi Bay Kitchen, Kiev Deli of Sarasota and more. And when locals need to stock up on new clothes, there's a Burlington nearby as well.
