Popular waterside neighborhood in north Seattle
Green Lake is in north Seattle, just 6 miles from downtown. It's the same distance west to Puget Sound's Shilshole Bay. "It's a super popular, very central neighborhood with a lot going on and very high prices," says Geoff Hill, managing broker and a top-producing agent with Keller Williams Greater Seattle. Highlights include waterfront homes, plenty of shops and eateries and a sizeable park with endless recreational opportunities.

Green Lake Park, Shilshole Bay nearby
At the center of the neighborhood is Green Lake Park, which has beaches with lifeguards, a wading pool, a playground and sports courts and fields. "On the first really beautiful day that we get in the spring, everybody in the world is there," Hill says, "The park will get crowded, so people try to hit it up in the morning or at dusk. There are two different paths; one hugs the water's edge. You can use bikes or Rollerblades on the path that's paved, but it's more popular with people walking with strollers and whatnot." The park is also home to the Seattle Public Theater, a community theater inside a converted bathhouse. Woodland Park is at the south end of the lake. Hill says the park has plenty of amenities, including a skills park for BMX and a pitch-and-putt golf course, and it hosts concerts in the meadow all summer. The Woodland Park Zoo is here as well. Puget Sound's Shilshole Bay is 6 miles west of Green Lake. The area's bayside highlights include Shilshole Bay Marina, a fishing pier and sailing and yacht clubs. A bit to the north is Golden Gardens Park, which has one of the only sandy beaches in Seattle.

I enjoy the community and the people living here. The lake itself is lined with many shops that one can enter after a nice walk around green lake. The neighbors are friendly and the cost of living is reasonable.

I loved the chance to live here but I know I will not live here long term. The weather is too depressing for a long term commitment. I love the city and all the different things to do, hiking, biking, theater, and concerts but all these things are available in a better climate that is not as expensive.
