Westavia
Homes that accentuate Southern charm
Accentuating its Southern charm and character, Westavia is filled with single-family, Colonial-Revivals, sprawling ranch-style homes and charming Creole cottages. Most homes were built in the 1980s, ranging from $140,000 to $325,000. Middle-range priced homes can be found in Franklin Estates subdivision, and higher-end homes with large lots are predominantly in the Ching Dairy Farmettes subdivision. Covered front porches, large pack decks and elegantly paved patios are primed for entertaining guests or relaxing in the peace and quiet. Residents enjoy spacious lots, spanning over 7 acres, and many homes come with fenced-in pastoral yards, expansive storage sheds and barns to keep farm toys. Beautifully landscaped lawns are filled with palm trees, ornamental shrubs and flower beds, reflecting the natural beauty of Semmes. The city is known as the “nursery capital of the world” for its many nurseries and azalea and camellia production. Nurseries are part of the city’s character and charm, and azaleas perfectly pepper the landscape of this quiet neighborhood. The neighborhood’s blanket of mature towering oak trees offers Westavia residents ultimate privacy and tranquility; however, the action isn’t too far away.Mary G. Montgomery High's Agriscience program
Served by the Mobile County Schools District, local students attend Semmes Elementary, Semmes Middle School and Mary G. Montgomery High School. The elementary school earned a B on Niche, and the middle school earned a C. Semmes Elementary provides volleyball and archery teams, an annual turkey trot and regular parenting days. Earning an overall C-plus from Niche, the high school offers track and football teams, a drone flying club and seven greenhouses on campus for its Agriscience program.Explore nearby Semmes' parks
While Westavia doesn’t have any parks directly within the neighborhood, residents only need to travel 2 miles to get to Semmes Municipal Park. Here, children can play in the splash pad or on the playground, fish in the catch-and-release pond or play a round of disc golf on the Admiral Semmes Disc Golf Course. Or visitors can stroll around the lush green space and stop for a picnic in one of the park’s five pavilions. Residents can also hop on Route 98 to access the Magnolia Grove Golf Course, which is only a 3-mile drive. The lush, recently renovated 54-hole course was included in the “Top 50 Public Courses” list by Golf World Magazine, and is considered perfect for beginner and seasoned golfers. And at Semmes Community Park, located right next to Mary G. Montgomery High, take Fido to the new K-9 Korner Dog Park or hike the paved path. Young athletes can also work on their game at the park’s baseball and soccer fields.
Dine at the Semmes Towne Center
Patrons to the Yellow Hammer Coffee can fuel up with a Masala Chai Latte and breakfast croissant and grab a wrap to-go for lunch. Most restaurants along Route 98 are chains like McDonald’s, Arby’s and Foosackly’s, but the 2-mile drive into Semmes offers plenty of options. In the Semmes Towne Center, residents can enjoy smoked chicken wings, St. Louis-style spareribs and banana pudding at Moe’s Original BBQ. Or they can sip on award-winning margaritas and share nachos at Pedro’s Tacos and Tequila Bar. Walmart, Goodwill, Ollie’s Bargain Outlet and other retail options can be found here. For more entertainment, fine dining and vibrant city attractions, hop on the highway to get to downtown Mobile.
Quick connections to amenities and institutions
With U.S. Route 98 running along the southern border, residents can conveniently get to shopping, dining and access downtown Semmes in 3 miles. Several universities and college campuses also surround the neighborhood. By hopping on this route, residents can access the University of South Alabama in 7 miles, Spring Hill College in 10 miles and Faulkner University in 10 miles. Interstate 65 gets residents to downtown Mobile in 15 miles, and the closest airport is Mobile Regional Airport, a 7-mile drive via U.S. Route 31.
