Founded in 1781 as one of the original 13 townships in Washington County, Smith Township continues to embrace a small-town feel. The township features several residential villages, and fewer than 5,000 people live among its rolling farmlands, towering forests and sprawling State Game Lands. “The houses there are definitely more spread out, and people like the privacy,” says Celeste Rosen, a Realtor with Re/Max Select Realty with over 14 years of experience in the industry. Most homes in Smith Township were built between the turn of the 20th century and the mid-1900s. The average value of homes in Smith Township is about $198,000, while neighboring communities like Robinson Township and Hanover Township average upwards of $230,000. Proximity to State Game Land and the Panhandle Trail
Between the residential villages of Smith Township are expansive swaths of State Game Land. In the northwestern corner of the township is State Game Lands 117, which covers nearly 3,000 acres and allows residents with hunting licenses or range-use permits to hunt native game such as white-tailed deer, turkey and ring-necked pheasants. A paved section of the Panhandle Trail weaves through the township, connecting the communities of Bulger, Joffree and Burgettstown. The entire trail system spans 29 miles and follows the path of the former Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railway, more commonly known as the Panhandle Route. While trains no longer traverse the route, the trail is now a popular spot for walkers, runners and bikers.
Smith Township surrounds the borough of Burgettstown, which covers less than 1 square mile along PA 18. Burgettstown Community Park has a playground, basketball court and a covered pavilion. Just down the street is the Burgettstown Community Library, which offers book clubs and educational programming for all ages. Kids can also join local athletic leagues such as the Burgettstown Area Youth Soccer Association and the Burgettstown Area Youth Baseball and Softball Association.

Smith Township lacks public transportation and is largely car-dependent. Pennsylvania Route 18 – locally known as Smith Township State Road – bisects the township and winds through acres of rolling farmland. Smith Township is served by the Burgettstown Area School District, which earns a C-minus from Niche and has an average student-teacher ratio of 12-to-1.
