Small town New England in a financial sweet spot
Somers is a small Connecticut town of about 2,200 people just across the border from Massachusetts. In fact, it was part of Massachusetts until its annexation to Connecticut in 1749. Throughout the 1800s, Somers' industry primarily consisted of saw- and gristmills, and the Somersville Manufacturing Company produced woolen textiles in the town until 1970. Today, Somers is more known for its agriculture and location between Springfield, Massachusetts and Hartford, Connecticut. "It's small town New England, and it still has the feeling of a bucolic farm town," says Victoria Clark, broker/owner of Connecticut Commercial Realty & Select Homes and Somers resident. "Families that come to live here are very involved in the schools and sports. And as far as real estate goes, I describe the area as a financial sweet spot between New York sprawl and Boston sprawl because we're just outside those markets."

Spread out subdivisions with homes priced above the state average
The median single-family house price in Somers is about $426,000, slightly above Connecticut's average home price of $410,000. Although many homes in Somers are in subdivisions, houses tend to be relatively spread out on at least an acre of land. Many back up to wooded areas for a rural feel. Some homes in Somers date back to the 1800s, though there has been slow development from the 1900s to today. "I feel like Somers traditionally has had a big handle on growth. I see the growth here continuing to be very slow. A lot of people have lived here for a long time and like the way it is," Clark says. Houses typically cost between $250,000 and $350,000 for smaller homes like ranches and Cape Cods and can range up to $700,000 or more for larger farmhouses and Colonial Revivals.

Small class sizes in Somers School District
Somers School District has an overall B-minus grade from Niche and only one public school path. Children usually begin at B-minus-rated Somers Elementary School and continue to B-rated Mabelle B. Avery Middle School and B-rated Somers High School. The school district has a student-teacher ratio of 10-to-1, lower than the national average of 17-to-1, and Clark says lacrosse and soccer are popular sports for students. "People get excited and rally around the high school teams when they go to state levels," she says.

Somers High School is located on a larger education campus with the town's other schools.

Hiking at an old YMCA summer camp and more recreation
Camp Aya-Po is a public park that used to be the site of a YMCA summer camp. From Camp Aya-Po, visitors can walk the trails around Hurds Lake or climb to the summit of Perkins Mountain. The park has relics from the old summer camp to discover, like a brick chimney in the woods, an amphitheater with wooden benches overlooking the water and a large, rusted bell. Clark also recommends hiking up to the lookout tower on Soapstone Mountain and walking through the woods and along creeks at McCann Family Farm Trails. Golfers can head to Cedar Knob Golf Course, an 18-hole fairway that got its name thanks to its natural boundary of cedar trees. Sonny's Place has indoor and outdoor fun for families, including an arcade, laser tag, a zip line and go-karting.

Families gather for the Four Town Fair and Bowers Lacrosse Tournament
Each year, Somers hosts the Four Town Fair alongside the towns of East Windsor, Ellington and Enfield. This agricultural event has been going on since 1838 and now brings in almost 20,000 people over four days in September. "Kids come back from college to come and see all their friends [at the fair]," Clark says. Events over the weekend include a vintage car show, pony-pulling and frog-jumping contests, livestock exhibitions and auctions. Youth athletes also come out for the annual Paul Bowers Memorial Lacrosse Tournament in Somers. About 160 teams from around the Northeast compete in the tournament over a weekend in June.
Locally owned businesses satisfy everyday needs
"We have a small commercial base here. Most of the businesses service the day-to-day needs of people," Clark says. Somers' casual spots include Mario's Pizzeria & Ristorante for pizza and wings and Hometown Kitchen for brunch and comfort food like steak and burgers. Locals pick up groceries at Geissler's Supermarket off Route 83.
Worthington Vineyards & Winery gives visitors a front-row seat for the town's vibrant fall foliage and natural scenery of the pond and hills. Here, neighbors can enjoy a glass of wine and catch up while their kids play. "They sell alcohol, but it's family-focused. I go there and walk my dog all the time too," Clark says.

Correctional institutions and commuting by car to neighboring cities
Folks in Somer mostly get around by car and can take Route 83 13 miles northwest to Springfield or connect with Interstate 84 from Route 83 to Hartford, 24 miles southwest. Many people commute to either Springfield or Hartford, and agriculture is a big industry in Somers itself. Additionally, Osborn Correctional Institution and Northern Correctional Institutions in Somers and Enfield Correctional Institution just across the town's border are medium- and high-security prisons that collectively employ close to 1,000 people.
Bradley International Airport, just north of Hartford, is less than 20 miles west of Somers. Johnson Memorial Hospital is just east of Somers, and residents also have the option to go to Hartford Hospital, about 25 miles southwest, or Baystate Medical Center, about 17 miles northwest in Springfield.
Unpredictable Connecticut weather and low crime
Somers has a CAP Index crime score of 1, indicating a very low crime risk compared to the national average of 4. The Somers Police Department reported 28 total crimes in the town in 2023, including 12 violent crimes and 16 property crimes.
Weather in Somers reflects the rest of Connecticut: "We get traditional New England weather: it's absolutely gorgeous in the summer, and winters vary," Clary says. "Winters haven't been as terrible as I remember growing up, but we get some nor'easter events with snow and ice."
